Opps just re read the post I forgot the vital piece of information yes the head gasket was backwards, the reason for the loud cheer. Must have been the apprentice engine builder or the friday arvo build after lunch at the pub.

Well at least the primary culprit has been identified and you didn't do all that work for nothing!!
Should be all plain sailing from here on now Andrew.

Well i hope so. That was my biggest fear, was that I pulled the head off and found the gasket wasn't backwards.

Yeah, that would suck. Good to hear you've found and fixed the problem.

Well what a weekend spent all Saturday finishing off re assembling and after 2 goes at tweaking the values I still had a tapping sound. I gave up in disgust and went to the bar. Sunday arvo a mechanic friend offered to come over and have a look fired it up and there was the tapping sound, pull the passenger rocker cover and there was a very loose rocker arm must have had the cam in the right spot when i tighten it up bugger. Checked all the rest all ok, rocker covers back on AGAIN. Fired it up no tapping chattering. You rippa. Just a pity something so simple stopped me making the club run.

Well after a few test runs and driving it too work in the traffic this morning the temp gauge barely moved off 180 F but it was cool morning. So now I just need to wait for a hot day and some traffic for a real test. But suffice to say with the fan coming on at the lights then turning off while moving. I guess the problem is FINALLY sorted if its not be buggered if I know what it is. thanks to everyone for there input and to Rob from the club for his invaluable advice and patience.
Cheers
Andrew

Overheating
Andrew,
Great to hear the issue seems to be fixed, nothing worse than a car
that overheats.
This is why club membersship is so valuable, it has saved you time
and more importantly money.
