Default ls engine oil coolers

hi guys
just wondering if / or is any one running oil coolers on their ls engines
as this weekend I gave mine a workout around some of the hills around the area & found that my oil temp was getting a bit higher than normal
the only difference to the car is a belly pan to stop rocks & such
belly pan has small holes for air 12 to be exact 3/4 in
all help would be great
i'm using vdo gauges & oil temp is measured at the top of the oil filter
temp reached 105 normally only gets to 87 at the best

My cooler is functional, seen it maxed at 102 on the track. Usually under or around 80 on the street.

As an aside I had noticed in my test runs that the oil temp gauge didn't get off zero.

Is there a simple way to test the sender first to determine if that is the culprit?

boil the kettle and pour it over the sender maybe?

My oil temp tends to "follow" the Engine temp. Normally under 80 in a good cruise. In hot weather/traffic it gets to 100. I don't have an oil cooler. On the track it can get to about 110-115 after a 6 lap sprint or 10min sprints etc. I haven't done an oil cooler setup (yet :-)) as i figured its more plumbing to potentially leak. I always run good fresh synthetic oil etc. Maybe one day. Although I do worry about a stone piercing the Oil cooler radiator core etc. Cheers Gregg

Slowy, common problem is if its a single wire sender then the body of the sender is not earthing properly on the engine/head block etc. This could be due to thread tape on the threads of the sender.

If its dual wire then measure the resistance between the wires and see if it changes when you do a heat test.

Default Oil Coolers

Hi Rob,

I have experimented with coolers for a while in my Daytona, there is

very limited air flow under the bonnet due to the design.

I didn't run one originally but the more track work I did the hotter the oil

temp went (over 150 Deg on hot days) I changed oils to full synthetic and

that heelped a bit. I then ran a large V8 PWR cooler but space is at a premium

so it was located under the sump with very limited air flow. This didn't do a

thing so I added a thermo fan and this didn't do anything also.

I bit the bullet and installed a smaller Cobra type ccooler at the front of the

car to maximise the air flow and it has reduced the oil temp to a more

reasonable 120 deg on hot track days. The water temp is around 80-90 deg.

Improved racing have a bunch of different oil cooler adapters and kits for LS1. I'm running a Mocal unit with a built in oil thermostat that i sourced from them.

I run a Mocal also with this adapter. No thermostat. Fits perfect to the side of the pan with -10 lines.

I have a 2 month old turbo charged Audi that regularly hits 105 degrees (oil temp) and up to 110 on hot days just cruising around. So long as your oil is up to the task I wouldn't be concerned. Eg, full synth GM approved.

Regular oil changes and don't abuse the car on 40 degree days and you'll be fine. I'd be putting a cooler on the power steering though - speak to Stiffy about that!
