Porsche V8 donor for Cobra
Just woke up in the middle of the night last night wondering if it's possible to use a Porsche Cayenne V8 petrol or the V8 diesel as well as the running gear, heaters and air con, wiring loom, seats etc in a new AP Cobra build that I am undertaking mid next year. I am open to hear all the pro's and cons and would love to know if anyone has done it. I only thought of it as I am a massive fan of both. You can pick up a good (undamaged) condition 2006 Cayenne 4.5L V8 car for around $20k with only 125,000kms on the clock. Please let me know if this just sounds silly or if it could be a goer.

Anything is possible...
There's a guy putting a Ferrari V8 into an AP GT40 that I know of. Cheers |
Have you thought of having a chat with Wil at Island Custom Cars over on Kangaroo Island?
You're in the same local area and he has a history of attempting the more difficult or unusual Cobra builds. Read some of his posts on this forum. Very interesting. |
I can certainly understand the Petrol engine, but a Diesel?

Expensive engine to fix or modify. There are better options, but if that's what floats your boat then give it a go!

THAT ought to be FUN!!! Cheers!! Dugly  |
The Porsche diesel engine is in fact an Audi engine

Diesel Cobra? Why not cut the roof off the Porsche and put side pipes on it?
|
Go back to sleep lad, it was just a nightmare... think about the maintenance and repair costs of a Porsche and the resale value of your car....
Mine has a tab on it that says " Powered By Ford ".:) |

A Sports car should sound like a sports car, not a truck. |
Would a Porsche V8 even fit? they are a big engine.Get yourself an LSA if you need that much power :)
|
I'm lovin that there is a "non-Ford in a Cobra" thread, and the GMs aren't getting trashed for once :D

Why not put an DC electric motor with direct drive in it. Massive torque and no gears due to a straight torque curve line. Of course you need to order a pot of coffee and recharge your cell phone on your "fill-up" stop. But you don't "burn" fuel at stoplights! And ZERO maintenance! And best of all, you cannot burn your ankle on the side pipes!

Electric Cobra
Been done....there is even a electric coupe.....

Thanks for all the thoughts. The more I read your comments and think about it, the better I think it may be just sticking with an LS7. I already have a new Cayenne Diesel and it goes link stink but I do agree that the sound might not be satisfying enough. It is great that there are so many options available but I still can't quite get my likes accustomed to Electric. The shape and style of the car is just too beautiful and needs a tuned voice box to match.

I've often thought a Mazda 20B Turbo (triple rotor rotary) would be a great motor in a Cobra. I love the sound of a hot rotary (Check out the quad Rotor powered Mazda 787 LeMans car).
Had similar thoughts about and XR6 Turbo motor in a Cobra. They are getting phenomenal power out of these things. However the sound they both make while great in their own right just doesn't equate with Cobra. Cheers |
I wonder if with a decent sound amplifier you could perfectly replicate a v8 sound?

One of my friends drove a Ford pickup (F250, I think) powered by a diesel...he had a loud exhaust system on it and until the engine was shut down and one could hear those turbos spinning down there was no reason to think it was a diesel, it sounded that "good".
