				Cobra registration in NSW

I built a Cobra with a 302 Windsor motor and Jag running gear in 1995 when living in Perth. I then re-registered it in Victoria and then again in New Zealand. I now want to bring it back to NSW. Can anyone recommend someone to take it to who can make any changes needed for NSW compliance? I am Sydney-based Thanks for your assistance

I would have thought engaging an engineer would be the best bet.. then getting it registered in QLD or VIC.. NSW is utterly ridiculous at the moment to get anything passed.

		Hi John and guys.
I'm in a similar predicament. I'm building a pretty wild Cobra in the US (540ci, 20" wheels etc) with the goal of bringing it back to Australia. The build is at a stage where i need to understand what needs to be considered for bringing it "home" so I'm after any wisdom I can get.
Much appreciate in advance.

				Bring your Cobra home

Hi Lex, The requirements will depend on which State in Australia you are planning to bring your Cobra back to. I am familiar with the rules in WA and Vic as I registered mine in both of those States, and they are both different. For instance, side pipes are legal in WA but not in Vic.

		Actually sidepipes are legal in Vic, or more accurately there are no ADR's or local state laws that prohibit them. To get an ICV with sidepipes registered I believe the requirements would fall into two areas;
1) the engineer would have to sign off on "general safety requirements" (I forget the actual ADR) e.g. engineer may determine that heat shields are needed.

2) pass the noise test

The ADR you may be thinking of regarding to exhaust pointing at the footpath, was deleted years ago.

With a 540ci engine, good luck with number 2) above , and while we're at it good luck with the emissions test!

 ^^ this.
My LSA-powered Pace barely passed the IM240 emissions test. And that was running a factory PCM, a factory tune tweaked by HSV's top emissions guy, OEM cats and the motor is only 378ci.

Perhaps you might get it through on the Vic club reg scheme (assuming you are coming back to Victoria)?

I don't believe QLD has an emissions test but they likely have a noise test.

However - this will be a personal import and hence none of the ADRs will actually apply.

Treeve, is there a different way to interpret "acceptable ADR standards" for personal imports?
 https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicl...tions/pis.aspx

"A personal import plate is evidence that the vehicle is an approved vehicle import and allows the vehicle to be registered. Before you may apply for a personal import plate, the vehicle must be brought up to acceptable ADR standards and the Endorsement of Compliance Certificate must be completed. For Australian registration purposes, a vehicle imported under the Personal Imports Option must:
be roadworthy; and
meet minimum safety standards.
Modifications to bring the vehicle up to minimum safety standards can be deferred until you wish to register the vehicle."

OK, so here's why people like me have a job. There's no such thing as NSW ADRs.
The ADRs are the ADRs.
Sidepipes are legal in NSW and have been since 2007. This is another story, and one that I have told on this forum a number of times.

The 'minimum safety standards' which must be met are detailed in the following VSI:
 http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/...d-vehicles.pdf
So again, a personal import doesn't have to comply with all the ADRs, just the very basic requirements highlighted in the above link.

Note that obtaining import approval does not give you a right to registration.

Each state is responsible for the registration of vehicles within that state, and hence they have their own registration regulations which is why things re different between each state. There are no differences between the ADRs between states, rather there are differences in the registration regulations.

In my mind, this is a perfect reason for abolishing the states. This country is massively over-governed.
