Been busy working on my car. Front suspension, brakes and steering is all finished. I'm putting the rear suspension together at the moment.
How's your car progressing? We've all been waiting for some more photos of that tasty paint job. Got any wheels for it yet? Did you go for the Oz wheels HB replicas? I'm Saving my pennies for the motor and box but I just put a dent in that effort by buying a Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign. I've always lusted after Jags and I finally got around to buying one. One owner, low Km, beautiful condition and fully loaded with every electric doo-dad. Haven't posted in the Aussie forum for a while since it seemed everyone was posting in the general forums. I'd like to see some more activity on the Aussie section though. How about some discussion on what the down under guys are building or doing to their Cobras? Cheers |
Not as much happening here as I'd like - I'm still saving to buy my gearbox. $12,000 for the G-Force box has slowed my spending recently:CRY: The latest Auto Action had a Holinger 6 speed for $8,000, but it sold the morning the magazine came out. I run a newsagency and I still didn't ring early enough...
There's a guy in Brisbane who runs "Venom Custom Fabrication". He's a Cobra owner and member of the Cobra Club. My car's with him at the moment getting all sorts of bits made for it, from steering shafts, steering rack mounts, alum boot panels, custom shape dashboard, etc etc. |

For the Victorians, are you aware that the CCC is running a drag session at Heathcote this Sunday (27/1) I believe. With 30's predicted it could be a good day out generally, although not so good for racing. Mike I have seen some of you picture posts and I should arrange a time to eventually see your beast, seeing as it is still my preferred manufacturer to this point. How has the build gone so far? Im just waiting on some pricing from G V Auto and then I'll be sending the car back in.At this stage she will be getting a windscreen & wipers,tailshaft,Aldan rear shocks and a complete clutch and braking system. I'm moving house this weekend and things are probably going to be slow for 6-12 months untill we buy another after renting for a while in Gisborne. Mike, I still plan to catch up when things slow down a little and see how things are going. Its allways good to see and hear what others are doing with their cars and when I can work out how to put pictures with posts, I'll put a few up. Cheers Chris Lidgerwood Melb Vic |

I like it out in Gisborne. The Wife and I wer looking out that way a while back. I wouldn't mind 3 or 4 acres out that way, enough room for kids to run around (or ride around on some home built mechanical contraptions). I class myself as one of those kids as well. I am just lazy. Attached an update for ya'll though. Body is at painters getting an interesting colour. I am not doing much myself, outside of re-pricing some bits for stages 3 and 4. Looking at taking delivery some time in February or March. Loking forward to that, and should hear more at that time. cheers to all;) |

I didn't say the reading wasn't fun but it would be more fun to be in the build stage. Also I wouldn't feel such like a leper at the club meetings when I manage to attend. What diff ratio have you planned for? I have heard some of the club members talking figures such as 2000 rpm at 100km/hr in top gear. I had planned on driving the car a lot and large distances and didn't want to have to take out a loan just to fuel the devil. Have I heard wrong on this score or is it achievable whilst still having a tractable vehicle? Slowy:confused: |

Those wheels look awesome. I had my reservations about ordering them without seeing them on the car but your pic has made up my mind. I've always liked the look of the shallow dished wheel with a 17" rim. Deep dished wheels look great with 15" rims but the 17 neds a flatter look. Did they come with the spinners or a plain center cap? You went with the 275/40/17 235/45/17 tyre combination? Looking very good. Hi Stephen, The diff ratio is 3.45/1 Which means a box with an overdrive will probably be a must for extended open road work. I think I calculated it would be doing about 2500 RPM at 110Kmh with a 1-1 top gear. You shouldn't feel your a lepper at the club meeting just 'cause you haven't started your build yet. I'm sure most of the people in the club have been in the same situation before you. But for the next meeting don't forget to wear rags and carry bell. :LOL: Cheers |

I haven't even begun building my garage in which to build the Cobra! I am keen to chat with some Cobra-people, and go to a meet. Can someone point me in the direction of a meet calander around Melbourne? I called a few numbers a mate gave me from a recent car mag, with no success (wrong numbers all). Guy. |

Mike, I posted a long winded reply about gearboxes on the original site, but with it's disappearing act I'll answer again.
Richmond aren't happy about the idea of their gearbox behind my motor. The tech guy said it might be OK for a while, but for circuit racing with the occasional dragstrip pass, he wouldn't recommend it. Jerico are stronger again, and www.gforcetransmissions.com are top of the tree. Mike Long, the owner of G Force Transmissions and Long Shifters is fantastic to talk to. His gearbox is a more precise unit overall, and he's backing his product behind anything up to 1300hp. It's a straight-cut, non synchro box which means adjusting to the clutchless upshifts, and critical heal&toe downshifts. I started with wanting to do just a few things on the Cobra and it has just been one thing after and...virtually a complete restore.
*the body is at the painters * the motor is at Southern Automotive being turned into Monster 427 Stroked *completely redoing the interior, New carpet, seats,etc.. * sent all engine pieces, Headers, etc...to HPC to get coated * New aluminum radiator * all U-JOints, bushings, fittings, ...REPLACED * New Roll-Bar ( 3" Taller) Should be sone when the Snow Melts... I think i asked you sometime ago on what you think of the G-force T56 transmission, I am still considering one, due to triple cone syncros, and semi straight cut gears. I like the GF5R and its probably a bit stronger, but the T56 has the 4340-300m mainshaft upgrade. My motor is being built virtually a Nascar engine with 100bhp less, so I thought to myself this car will be a total race car that is road usable, so have a rip snorter engine and a clunky trans may be to much and take any road pleasure out of it! Having said that I used to run a Seanz Transam race box on the road and it wasnt to bad. |

Both paint jobs were arranged by Ian at Classic Revival and I will not complain at all. The car looks great and has won a couple of trophies in local shows to boot. You can check out the pics in the gallery. Cheers. |
