The right turbos and enough boost will get you 700+ out of almost any engine. Guys are making 1000+ out of reasonably built small blocks.
My little ol' small block makes 800+ and it does it on nothing more exotic than Optimax. Mine has the bonnet scoop from hell, but it could all be made to fit under a standard bonnet.
Best budget idea for big HP is Lexus 4.0 with a couple of turbos. Figure on between 500 to 600 out of a well tuned internally stock motor. That's more then enough for a Cobra. It'll make your Minis feel pretty tame

I will be rebuilding my motor with new cam, modified heads and higher comresion pistons, also lighter flywheel and get it through adr's then buy or make a 8 Throttle Body intake system for it.
I dont really know alot about forced induction (i never was a fan of it) so I cant really help you much there.
I will get mine going and as I get used to it then I will modify for more power.

Inazuma,
I thought you started out wanting a near original Cobra.
If so, why do you want all this HP sauce?

Hey...a new Queenslander....Welcome to the funny farm inazuma_x
Before you go getting your knickers in a huge knot about HP, keep in mind that an average cobra weighs about 2450 Lbs., or about 1115 Kg in the new language.
Now, If you stuff anything over about 400HP in these things then all your gonna get is smoke...and lots of it...Just ask PCC why he now lives in a three lane street since Craig (750hp) visited.
You might also like to get to the Cobra Club brekky (first sunday of each month) at Sanctuary cove. Get there about 7:00 and you'll see lots of cars with different engines.
Lastly, remember that cobra's are supposed to have FORD engines in em... we maybe will tolerate one of them Lexus 4.0 with a couple of turbos..but only because Queensland sets the standard with these things.
If you put one of those LS1 thingys in, then your likely to be exported to cities south of the border which don't enjoy the conditions depicted under my signature.

Look close and you see the dings mate.
Partly due to a 3 inch clearance and partly because it ran away from me (long story).

It may be a long story, but I don't believe it's one that I've heard.
What happened? (or is this a conversation best left for our slightly delayed New Year get-together?)

thanks for the welcome
this place is alot friendlier than some of the mini forums i am a member of...
yeah i am sure 400 is probably enough...in theory...but...is it really enough? REALLY??? hehehe
i think the most powerful car i have ever driven is my friend's alfa romeo (184kW)...and i use my 34hp 1966 Morris Mini Deluxe as my daily driver...so i am not really very well aquainted with high power cars...but i am addicted to speed...the more the merrier :P (i dont mean the drug obviously--this is for the moderator)...

moderators? Are forums supposed to have moderators???
Seriously, my previous Cobra had a GENUINE 400hp. 351W, solid roller cam, alloy heads, good intake, ignition, exhaust etc. With a 5 speed, that car was so much fun to drive. You had to be carefull where you used full throttle, because wheelspin (or loss of license) was only too happy to bite you when you weren't expecting it.
A genuine 400hp will get you 0-100 in sub 5 seconds, and do a quarter mile in the mid 11 seconds @ 120mph. That's enough to satisfy most !

that would be plenty enough to satisfy me...what do you mean by a "genuine" 400hp? you mean as opposed to people bs'ing about how their car is the fastest thing on earth and dyno'd at like 800hp?

whoops...i didnt mean you were bs'ing craig...but i know of some riceboys who are friends of a friend who think their 200sx's and excel's can do 0-100 in under 5...and told me about how their $10,000 of upgrades can make their car better than anything out of america or europe for more than twice the price...
basically people who's mechanical knowledge of what goes on under the bonnet stops with hot4's magazine and their local bodykit dealer...

Genuine power is either dyno proven or track proven in my books. You're dead right - the amount of BS that goes on with power figures is a laugh. I'll probably cop some **** for this comment, but I would go so far as to say that a GENUINE 400hp in a Cobra would put it in the top 5 fastest cobras in the Queensland Cobra Club.
Oh yeah - I'm not too good at detecting sarcasm, so if you'r wondering if my 800+ is BS, it's been on the dyno with witnesses I won't try to bluff anyone by saying it's the fastest car around, because it's not useable power. It is fun though !

Ohh..gotcha.....yep...but some of those bluddy rice burners can go.
What pi$$es me off is that they can switch on like another 100 hp at the flip of a switch.
They are usually pretty wary of challenging an angry sounding Cobra tho.

You guys type too quickly. I must admit that I was wondering if you were talking about a certain blue cobra with a big nose....
Don't underestimate some of the ricers though. I've seen, and been in, a few little turbo cars that really impressed me.
GTRs and VL Commodores are running in the 8s now
4 cylinder street cars are into the 9s
Rotaries in the 8s.
Oh, the indignity.....
At least the V8s sound better !

believe me i wasnt meaning you...or anyone here...thats not to say there arent some people here who bs about their dyno results...but i believe the proof is in the pudding...
if you say your car can push 800+ ponies and you have trouble standing up against a stock skyline off the line then i will laugh at you...but if someone (NOT YOU CRAIG!) says their car has been dyno'd to 800 then i would expect that to be unbeatable by anything you would see on australian roads...and not just win by a bit...by a country mile...if not then you are gonna hear me laughin :P
