Default Roll bar set up

Hi All,

I've been messing about with my roll bar setup lately. It a job I've been meaning to finish for a while and since the painter wants to start soon I thought I'd better get it done and get all the holes cut.

It made from 60mm OD aluminium tube with a heavy 5mm wall. The mounts in the chassis were made for 2" OD tube so I had to machine up some stepped down sections for the ends to make it fit nicely.

The 60mm OD tube looks a bit chunkier than the normal 1.5' or 2" bar but it's quite subtle and looks good in my opinion.

I also modified the mounting bracket to make it stronger since I was worried that it might deflect or collapse in the case of a rollover. I added a shear plate accross the back of it to triangulate the whole thing.

What I've got to do now is make up the mount on the boot floor for the 3rd leg. I've got to also add a coresponding bracket off the chassis underneath to sandwich it to the fiberglass.

Once the last bracket is done I'll get the back brace Tig welded on. The step down sections on the ends will be plug welded and I'll also drill and tap the sleeve on the brace and retain it with some countersunk stainless cap screws.

The aluminium tube polishes up nicely and should come up like chrome with a bit of work.

Here's a few pics.

Your right Mike it does look good. I really like the idea of the braced bracket, I think Ill do the same. Great stuff.

Mike

Will you be placing a rubber or aluminiun ring around the bar?

The back bar looks as if it is nearly a perfect circle through the body?

The hole for the rear brace is oval. I was just lucky enough to get the angle on the hole saw spot on when I drilled it.

I'm machining up some aluminum trim rings but there will be a thin neoprene gasket under each of them to keep the water out of the boot. You can buy 1.5mm neoprene sheet from Clarke rubber and I'll make some large wad punches from exhaust tube to cut it out neatly.

Unfortunately no roll bar for the wife yet, I'm still contemplating that. I've got another hoop there but I like the asymetrical look of the single drivers hoop. I may make up a full width bar that I can swap back and forth. I'll machine up aluminium caps for the unused holes in the bodywork.

Cheers

Hey Mike
I'd probably stay with a single hoop
It's highly unlikely you would be going fast enough, or doing anything daring enough, for a roll-over with the wife in the car!!!!!

Lest ye suffer the wrath of the ALMIGHTY backhander

Just sharing experience!!

Cheers

My preference Mike for what its worth is two hoops along with two raydot mirrors - it just seems to balance the car out.

Not that the passenger mirror is any use as you can't see anything for the windscreen.

I know its not original, but it does seem to give the car some balance and it looks awesome from the back (a Cobra's best angle I think).

I'm going to install 2 hoops but with no third arm. I'll have an OD somewhere b/w 60-70mm and the hoops will be reclined on a small angle. Having 2 hoops with the third arms, for my tastes, puts too much shiny stuff on the back of a cobra which detracts you from those beautiful lines from behind. It's only fair that Mrs NASSTY enjoys as much protection as I do. But lets all hope that no one has the opportunity to test their rollbars out b/c a cobra has bugger all protection else where.

Can do Bernie. I can do them in polished aluminium. Stainless is a pain to machine.

Pete, I like those Raydot mirrors too. I might have to look at a second roll bar since I was looking at some fiberglass race seats today. The roll bars will take the attention away from the head rests.

Cheers

Mike,

Thanks, we can check the measurements out when I call over.

Polished aluminium would be excellent.

Should be around two or three weeks before I get over, all going ok.
