Default *wave* HI from a newB.. & a couple of Q's

*wave* *wave* Just a quick hello to you all, from Melbourne... I'm new at all this cobra replica scene and want to say how informative and helpfull this forum has been.. Coming from a Skyline GTR background, me and my mechanic have a dream ... a ac cobra running skyline GTR running gear fitted with an RB26DETT. Now I'm not sure if this entitles me free entry to the darkside club, hopefully not coz RB26 & LS1/2's don't mix the /kidding!! So if I can I'll call it the rising sun club!

Now after some searching I found an "infamous" bloke called Scott or some of you may know him as "OZVENOM", who is in the stage of building a chassis around the skyline AWD set up. Besides waiting for scott to get back me I wondered...

A) if anyone knows of someone making a CARBON/KEVLAR body rather than FG/Aliuminium??

B) An engineer in Melbourne that can assist with a certificate before the JAN 1/05 deadline changes

C) An Idea on the cost to build your cobra's..

PS: Hopefully see you all soon at the club meets.

Cheers
Simon

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the current ADR's stipulate that the motor must be sourced from a car that was legitimately sold in Australia. RB26's are imports aren't they.

Hi Brett,

I honestly wouldn't know?? But the RB26 was originally brought into Australia through Nissan in 89/90, in a limited run of 100 cars being the R32 GTR's... if you remember they were banned out of touring cars, after distroying the heart and souls of Holden & Ford fans.

Simon

89/90 motor. Being that old I don't think it would comply with the current regs.
At least that is the story in NSW.

If Rod Hadfield can get a car registered in VIC with a World War 2 fighter engine then I think anything would be possible.

Just about anything is possible if you have budget and influence. Sadly out of reach of us mere mortals.

Harrison Cobras(what OZVENOM works with) are perfect for Skyline running gear. You can order chassis with mounting for R32 diff and plenty of knowledge about for using Skyline parts with it. Finished Harrison with my brother last year running R32 diff, brakes, front uprights, handbrake etc etc. Just threw in decent adjustable suspension(AVCO) and decent gear box(Tremec). It runs Lexus 4lt V8 though. You can also ask for your Harrison to suit Lexus. Very nice engine. Even better once you turbo it. Of course OZVENOM helped us with it and supplied the kit.

In N/A form it does 12.4sec 1/4 mile on street tyres. And god bless the good fortune of my brother at this years Nationals it looks like it goes round in circles, launches, stops and handles better than we ever dreamed it would.

Isn't Vic the same as Qld where you have 5 year rule when it comes to age of engine?

You could possibly get an older engine complied like RB26 if you ran it on gas, but that is probably spoiling the fun a bit.

As to cost, I reckon $30K is the minimum to get a car on the road. Ours cost a touch more than that, but we splurged on a couple of big $$$ items. You hear of them being built cheaper, and there is people that can do it. We tried. We went to every single swap meet, used virtually all 2nd hand parts, imported shiney stuff directly from US and having TUF-427 use every bargain finding trick he had in the book to help us. This is also our 2nd Cobra build. We just couldn't do it cheaper and still have a Cobra that will perform, look right and sound right. It's the little stuff that adds up and due to WAF for most guys, it's not wise to keep accurate records. And for $30K you would have a Cobra with mostly 2nd hand gear, still in Gelcoat and with a pretty plain(cheap) interior. By the time you add paint, nice leather interior, nice wheels, some newer parts, some detailing, you would be up to $50k minimum.

Simon - I can't help you with advice about certification, and I don't know who sells kevlar bodies. I can tell you that I like your idea of an AWD Turbo 6 Cobra. About the only improvement I can think of is to substitute the old Nissan motor for some real HP. Nizpro can line up an 1100+ hp Ford XR6 motor for you, just bring cash......

well I got in contact with the engineering Aussie Mike recommended, and it seems that the RB26 is out of the question due to it not being a current AU spec engine.. had a chat with Scott and the other option is a 2JZ Supra, but this only came to AU as a non turbo, so I'm not sure whether this is OK yet..

750hp, Yeh, the only other 6 I could think of was the 4.0T out of the fords.. Otherwise, it looks like a V8 is my only other option, and most will know that Scott really likes the Lexus V8's..

PS: Does Scott really look like Mother Theresa?

Another option is to buy an already approved one. RB26 Cobra in Unique Cars at the moment for sale @ $35k.

Looked into getting a turbo approved in QLD and it is not a problem. Just got to make sure it doesn't make too much power when with the engineer.

The only reason we haven't done that "yet".. is because, our plan is to build a 4WD version, using as much gtr gear as possible.. buying one already completed then stripping it back to rebuild everything allover again is ok if your Kerry Packer with a bottomless pocket... but my name has neither kerry nor packer in it, so we are relying on some hard savings and "sponsors to come on board"

Sorry didn't realise it was going to be AWD. Lot of engineering involved in that.

You could always chop the top off a GTR.

Wink be verry verry carefull.

Craig I have some not so nice photos of you too.

Revenge can be verry sweeet.

Any way the shammy was nice and cool.

I think the xr6 turbo has a lot of merit it is after all a ford engine to keep the blue oval boys happy . and they make heaps of power with out too much work. and are adr compliant.

it will go like the clappers no matter what is powering it
Cause thats what turbos are for.

oz the mother @#*@&%.
