15" tyres
For the Aussies with 15" wheels, what tyres are you running and what do you think of them: wet, dry, road and track performance.

The eternal question... looks or performance.
15" tyres are very limited... there are some BF Goodrich Race T/A's I think they are called that are very good. All the rest are crap in Australia.
Do not mistake Race T/A's with standard T/A's - they suck!

15's are limited.
16's are very limited.
17's to 19's much better.
Tyres here follow mass production cars - I'm running on Nexens. Not a premier tyre but for 245 x 16 @ $100 (special special) not bad!!

15" Rubber
After searching around for 15" rubber to replace my hard as steel T/A's I decided on Hankooks as they had a softer compound and the required speed rating.
The car handled completley different with the new tyres (for the better, no under steer) and I have been quite happy with them.
Cheers,
Bryan

I am not too fond of how the raised lettering looks. It is rather busy looking. But that is just a personal thing.... beauty being in the eye of the beholder...
Questions:
Are the inside walls devoid of raised lettering?
Are they directional mounted?
Do they offer a 305 rear tire in 15"?
What are the sizes available in 15" tires.
What is the speed rating on these tires?

Mr Wilson
What can you tell us about the Hankooks? Are these the RA03?
Tread wear rating? How soft?
Sizes.
These appear to be not available in US.
They also appear not to have treadwear ratings. How is tire hardness provided by the tire Mfrs outside the US?

I've actually jumped up to 18's on my GT40.
Rubber choices available on 17 & 18" are amazing, plus the performance.
It all depends on what looks you are after I suppose, I originally did not like the look of 16" wheels when they first appeared on Cobra's, then got used to them and then didn't like the jump to 17" and then 18"...but if you pick the right wheels, they can look seriously good.
Seems the shape of GT40 works better than Cobra with larger wheel diameters and more modern wheel designs. Or maybe I have got used to seeing all the GT40's up here with 17 & 18" wheels.
I'm actually going to go the whole hog and fit modern 2 or 3 piece fully polished wheels. The cost is killing me, looks like I might not get any change out of $5k for wheels alone as I would like to get 13" rears for 335/30ZR18 tyres I have.

Mr Bryan Wilson I must thank you because, unkown to you, I saw a picture of you and your COB66 on the Australian Cobra Car Club Website and thought if that bloke lives in Australia and can make a Cobra that looks as good as it does then I 'must try' and do the same.
Cobb66/ (now known as) Bryan Wilson, one day we'll have to go for a drive/hoon together. Long live the 15 Inch rims and Big Bad Sidepipes!

Hankook tyres
Here is a link to the Hankook tyres site for those interested as they have a fair range of 15" tyres.

Blair, thanks for the complements but I didn't build the car it was built by Southern Roadcraft in England. Also a hoon together might be a bit difficult as I am in Victoria.
Cheers,
Bryan

Richard,
I too am a fan of the 15" rims. I have the Yoko 352's all round. I few years back I used the A008R on the front of a previous car to promote turn in (combat understeer). Although I haven't had the SPF on a track yet, it feel like the steering geometry is far better and won't suffer the same ills.
Wear is good, and the big sidewalls, although a little squirmy on a track, provide a far better ride for daily driving (my opinion).
I also have a spare set of rims with the T/A-R1's fitted for the track only. As soon as I get to spin them up, I'll let you know how they go.
Rebel.. I'm all for better rubber. I'll keep an eye out.

Cameron, Thanks mate.
As you know I have a set of yoko 352's which will do for street work. They aren't all that bad for the street and like you, I like the deep sidewalls from a ride point of view, and they don't look half bad.
I'm really waiting for tireguy on here to release his 15"cobra tyres.
The claims are he will be releasing some serious track tyres as well as a range of street tyres.
Cheers

Les.
There's a box coming out in the next few months from LA. I may try and get a set of ther big letter Goodyears.
Doug Pearce (Cobra builder/painter etc) has some tyres coming out. He is on 03 9 7394222 if you want them earlier.
I'm currently talking with an exporter there. Still thinking of sending my Cobra over and going for a drive.
Now that I have the GT40 to play with there.. .. maybe I will not send it
