Progress pics.
I've recently finished off my sidepipes and mounted the radiator and trans cooler.
I'm now ready to take the body off to install the motor and gearbox. That body is clean and smooth for unpainted and unpreped, very nice.

The Radiator is a 2 row (1 inch cores), I can measure it up if you need the dimensions??? Rob gets them made for him (from somewhere in QLD) to fit his cars, though I had to modify a few things to get it to fit the way I wanted.

Overall size is 24.5" wide, 18.5" high and the core is 14.5" high.
I've included a pic of the cowl - I had to modify it by a fair amount because I needed the radiator to be more upright so I could fit the trans cooler in the front, normally there isn't enough room. Looking Good Bobby. You'll probably have that machine on the road before mine at the rate you're going.
Building pipes is fun and a lot more fidly than most people would think. Getting everything to fit neat and consistent is a big part of the challenge. When cutting the 3 1/2" bends for the slash cut outlets I put the band saw through the bend about 15mm out from the wall of the pipe. To me this gives the most pleasing looking tip. I'll try to attach a pic of what I mean. |

a guy down here with a series II RMC had no end of problems with the original set up and spend months modifying and tweaking to no avail. He eventually managed to fit a new radiator in an upright position forward of the front cross member. It is large enough to run the twin fan and cowl set up from an EL? Falcon and now has no overheating issues, and can leave it idling all day. |

He used to be very involved with the club, but has moved out of town to a tranquil rural spot, and we don't see much of him. I'll chase him up and pass on your details. I should remember the details as we nutted it out together in '96/'97 when I was building my G-Force. Alloy units were not readily available then. I think the core he used was from a Landrover. It was a tight fit but works a treat. |

Cats??
Apart from the (minor?) environmental benefits, is there a good reason to run cats in side pipes? The way I look at it, if your going to run not so legal side pipes, why then worry about putting cats in as well? Is it true cats dont work after a few years anyway?
I reckon they look pretty good plums, plus we dont want Uncle Mike getting distracted! |
Of the few sets I've built with cats I don't think I've had any change out of $1K for materials on any of them.
I heard the fine for not having cats was substantial i.e. about $12,000. Where as if you are too noisy it's a mater of fix it and get it retested. These modern cats are pretty free flowing and don't hurt performace too much so I'll do my small bit for the environment and hopefully have a better chance of talking my way out of an infingement notice. Believe it or not, they actually help in noise muffling. For their length they reduce more noise than an equivalent length of glass wrapped 2.5" perf.
They help in reaching a reasonable noise level, which is hard to do in side pipes. |

Hi all,
I'm not new to the forum but have never posted before. Iam building an RMC and i have had no problems fitting the radiator or removing it. It has twin fans and both inlet and outlet are at the bottom of the radiator in fact making it easier to fit radiator hoses. Some G Force builders have installed the radiator in the tilted forward position. What i like about the radiator being tilted forward is that it is invisible from the front of the car (I don't find radiators attractive just necessary) Also the nose of the car has an aluminium air scoop which directs air though the radiator no air can get around it. The scoop is polished an is more appealing to look at than the radiator. The scoop is easily removed and the radiator can be removed through the nose with fans still attached. Perry |
Hi pezza, welcome to you and thanks for posting.
I also like the clean look of the RMC angled radiator but had heard some complain about overheating. If you remove the radiator out thru the nose then it must be relatively narrow as the nose opening is about 640mm wide on the RMC. Would you mind answering the questions in my previous post so I can make up my mind about this thing. Cheers and good to see another RMC owner in here. |
