Default Stripes on paintwork

I added a q to someone's post some time ago and got no response so I thought I would go direct.

Had a work mate ask me if the stripes on cobras are deliberately curved at the front or just laid straight.

The reason was that he knew of a fellow that specified slightly curved stripes over the bonnet to better match the curvy/bulbous symmetry of our cars.

Is this normal of just a personal quirk?

Evidently the curve variation was pretty small but the reason was something to do with the asthetics of straight lines on a curvy object. Sounds like a bit of nonesense to me but I would believe my mate saying that it was requested.

Last I heard, painter had cloth ears and had laid straight edge stripes and what for was on between he and owner.

I will let my mate know the outcome of any comments here. And of course I will specify the correct stripes when the time comes 2, 3 .....? years down the track.

Cheers

Ive read in a number of different places the stripes should taper in. Theres a layout on the era site I think with the "proper" dimensions. From what Ive read what your saying is exactly right, stright stripes on the curves doesnt look right?

Steve,
I printed off the ERA drawing and the painter layed it out exact to the dimensions given. They appear to be straight on the car, but are quite tampered on the drawing so my tip would be to use ERA dimensions. The CR body is similiar in shape to the ERA so it worked out ok for mine, not sure about a G- Force body shape.

Thanks for the lead guys, will show my mate tomorrow.

Anyone with experience of stripes on the G-Force care to comment?

Cheers

I reckon that the shapes are not so different that taper technique will yeild a different result. G-Force is (IMHO) marginally closer to the original shape (or maybe its just wheel offsets that get me) so I reckon it will be fine.

Intending to use that template on my RMC.

I'm with Lobelly, the difference in shape between different Cobra's would not be enough to affect look of the stripes. The Cobra with the flatest body is the DRB.

If you like the look of tapered stripes, then they will look/have the same effect on any Cobra sold here.

Interesting that a lot of Cobra's up here in QLD just have straight stripes. Haven't paid a lot of attention to the interstate cars, but expect the same holds true.

Thought about tapered stripes on the GT40, but it just doesn't have the curved sections to pull it off.

Thanks for the comments guys, will keep a copy of the stripes layout for my future painter.

......but it worries me that I just stumbled onto this issue through a mate at work. What other hidden beauties are there in a build that I could have a real fall over??

Hmm, I'm not so sure.

I have seen a coule of cars with tapered stripes and to me they just looked tapered.

Maybe I have seen some that were tapered and didnt realise it, because of the optical illusion being refered to. Usually optical illusions look different from different angles. I would definately want to see it on a car (not photo's) before painting my car like that.

Hmmm probably a wise post Cameron, anyone care to admit to tapers in Vict. I wouldn't mind looking at the two styles to gauge for myself, as Cameron put it!

Highly recommend that. Some people like tapered, some people like straight.

Don't worry, you can spot the difference. Look at the oil cooler hole for starters.

Default Stripes

My stripes are tapered and I think they look ok.
I have seen straight ones and they look flared out at the front.
Tapered stripes

Straight stripes

Cheers,
Bryan

Tapered or straight, its thickness that counts

Bryan,

I really like the "small stripes" on the outside rather than two wide stripes. Are they a specific width?

Cheers
Ben
