Default Any local knowledge?

Ok folks,
over Chritmas and new years I will be in your part of the world with a few free days and wondered if any of you could suggest some things to do or see.
I will be in Cairnes, Brisbane and Maroochydore. The schedule is not set yet so I don't know how long I will be at each place. Any ideas?

In Cairns you can do Great Barrier Reef tours, go to Green Island, head along up to Port Douglas , do tours up inthe hinderlands out of cairns, plenty to do or sit back and enjoy it with a few beers. Fraser Island is a must, beautiful sand Island covered in ferns, palms, fresh water lakes, dingos as well.
you shouldn't get bored at all, heaps around to do and see and drink, I'll let some other put some ideas in, other that enjoy your visit down under.

When your up Cairns way it really depends on what you want to see or do, Also something to remember is that Christmas time in Cairns is very humid (muggy), so If you are affected by the humidity then a trip up the tablelands is nice, go and see some of the volcanic lakes, visit the Kuranda markets, you can also go up to Kuranda on the skyrail, and come home on the train.
If you like the water then a trip to the reef and green island should be done.
Also as mentioned Port Douglas is good to see, also some of the animal parks are good.
Let us know what you like, ie animals, nature, quiet things, adrenalin junkie?

Come on Blair, jump in - I am sure things have changed in the 4.5 years since I moved away from the region.

Best thing to do while in Queensland.
Jump on a plane and head straight for Melbourne

Well I agree with the others! Things to do in Cairns:

Port Douglas for the wife to go shopping.

Go on a charter tour fishing, if you like fishing.

Skyrail up to Kuranda, train back.

But my guess is Christmas in Cairns this year my be a wet and windy one. Very hot up here for November!

I am away from Cairns around Christmas however, if I am around the same time you are, I would happily show you around.

Hey Tinker, Definately get to Port Douglas (and stop at Palm Cove on the way - quieter). Just north of Cairns (which is good for a day). Great restaurants (try "Salsa" - whenever anyone famous eats there they sign a plate and hang it on the wall -check out when Bill Clinton dined there!) Its gunna be hot though (as everyone has said) and you cant really swim on the beaches that far north due to stingers and the occaisonal croc! About 30 minutes North of Port Douglas is Mosmon gorge - real purdy - look out for natives.

Cheers

Melbourne is a good idea especially if the only reason you go is to transfer back to the States.

Jason, we've missed your melbournian whit

As suggested if you want to chill - go to Palm Cove.

Don't hang around Cairns itself as pretty boring - Sorry Blair.

Hit the outer barrier reef with an organised trip - at least you'll stay cool in the sea breeze (maybe).

Brisbane will still be hot (not quite as hot as Cairns). Last year was 40+ degrees on x-mas day. Find a pool, a bottle or two or three and become a fish for the afternoon. Whilst in Brisbane visit Stradbroke Island if want to chill or head to the Gold Coast (an hour away) if meter maids take your fancy.

Whilst in Maroochy drive up to Noosa (half an hour away). The wife will love it, plus the beach is pretty good if there is still some sand there.

Mmmmm, now if you came down to Melbourne one of the very hospitable Cobra owners would give you a run around Melbourne in their Cobra.

You guys sure look after me when I'm over there....

Let me know if you end up down this way. Only too happy to show you - a fellow Cobra owner - a bit of this fine city.

I recently spent some time with 'Badrich' from your area at the F1 Grand Prix. Also met a few of your friends at Santa barbara last April whilst Knotts was on - Not Knotts weekend...

Thumbs up Thanks to one and all for the input

Well the trip is done and wanted to thank you all for your suggestions.
Ended up only making it to Cairnes and Maroochydore. Stopped in Brisbane long enough to clear outbound Customs and never left the airport. Saw the Great Barrier Reef, Kuranda, Fraser Island etc. etc. Did my best to drink all your beer but was unable to complete the task. Saw plenty of what I now refer to as the Australian National Vehicle. A Toyota Land Cruiser (year is unimportant) with bars and a snorkle.
Had a great time and look forward to coming back again one day.

Good to hear you enjoyed your time in Australia.

If you think you saw some Landcruisers in Queensland, you should visit Alice Springs, almost every 3rd car is a Landcruiser.

There are rumors of another trip but the details are as of yet unknown.
I do hope to get to Sydney as I have friends there.

Hey Tinker, Next time you come do spend some time here in Brisbane.

If you happen to be here the first sunday of any month then you can be a guest at our club Breakfast. Here you will find top shelf Cobras, GT40's and Daytonas with real ford engines in them.( private joke given what Asp302 said)

Anyways, keep us posted.
