Swearing loudly
Had a bit of an incident in the workshop tonight. I was bleeding the brakes and I'd jacked the rear of the car up and had positioned one jack stand but had to jack the car up a bit more to get it in the right spot. As I lifted the car up a couple more inches the jack pad slipped out from under the rear cross member. It looks like a stone on the floor had stopped the jack from rolling forward as the car went up. The rear of the car dropped down onto the one jack stand and supported it's weight but unfortunately the jack itself was under the fuel tank which is now neatly crushed in the center.
Fortunately I wasn't under the car. I make a rule of never getting under a car unless safely on jack stands.
So there was a lot of swearing in my shed this evening. If I'd had a swear jar I'd probably have enough cash for a new tank. If I hadn't been worried about whether I had any fuel leaking in the shed I would have pulled that trolly jack out and sliced the bloody thing up with the plasma cutter.
The good news is the car has working brakes now. Bad news is I need a new fuel tank as I don't think this dent will buff out.
Be careful when working on your cars guys.

I don't even trust jack stands. I have a Kwik Lift. They're made in Oklahoma. I think I paid about 1600.00. Kind of pricy but sure is convient and safe.

had my own jack mishap this past weekend while reworking the sidepipe baffles.
dropped the car with one of the rear stands still in place fortunately it grabbed the chassis rail and and just hovered - havent tried the doors yet

MIke,
Glad to hear you are ok, Richards accident still haunts me and I only go under the car when it is nessesary.
To bad about the fuel tank, if it was a ford tank it would have held up 
Double ugly, lift looks great would not mind getting some thing like that.
Sounds like you will be going for a drive soon.

Good rule, same in my shop, just think of the new words you would have come up with if you had been under it.
I think the goat sacrifice is a good call as well

Boy were you fortunate. I have the same thing Double Ugly has and would never get rid of them. They are great for any car and I can sit up under mine. I can pull the transmission in 20 minutes with no problem. I took my tank out once with the car on them and it took about 15 minutes. I just put a wide board on a floor jack to support the weight and then undid the straps holding it and lowered it slowly to the floor. I love the Kwik Lift as I can put it at any width for different width cars.

Tanks can be replaced....as long as your OK.
I am sure this wont slow you down much as you are still inspired from the first breathing of live into your Cobra.

I had the same thing happen about 1.5 years ago Mike, luckily for me I still had the VN tank in place so it wasnt as expensive as it could have been.
The main thing is that you where not under it when she came down.
Keep trucking on Mike, I am sure it will all be worth it.

Most people know my legendary lack of vehicle knowledge,IT Knowledge (I got in before REPTYL did ) BUT wouldn't this mean that the vehicle has less weight resulting in better performance

Glad your ok I was pinned under a side pipe from a faulty car jack and badly placed car ramp. Big learning curve, lets hope all cobra enthusiasts listen and learn so no one gets hurt. I was lucky my misses likes the car and was there to help. Now she goes round quoting she has bigger mussels than me. Haha

Cobra Make, Engine: Some friends started to make their own cobras, created a chassis and a mould for the body. Steering comes from GM, rear end from BMW, our brakes are vrom BRERMBO, the same type used in Porsches and F40

Hello, I am from Austria,
maybe there is a good hint for You. Depends on the damage.
If it is just a smaller one, why not try to pull it out with modern technology. Here in Europe bodyshops use a tool which is glued to the dented surface.After glue is hardened, you can pull the sheet out, and afterwards break glued - on tool away. A small dent my remain, but this method can spare the nasty work of changing the tank.
