Front number plate problem
We all know not running a front number plate is a bit of a no no.
This is an idea which maybe a little loop hole in the RTA.
Get a "bike rack" number plate.
For those who dont know what it is , its a very small number plate supplied by the RTA to be placed on a bike rack .
The bike racks normally mount on a toe bar which in most cars covers the number plate.
So the RTA will supply you a copy number plate , about the size of a motor cycle number plate to place on the bike rack.
Now as far as I understand these plates are completely legal and if you mounted it to the front of your car you may get away with it.
Hey it is a legal number plate supplied by the RTA.
But smaller !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck

If you have a hoop bumper, get a 427 style street flip lisence plate holder. It folds into nose at about ten mph, flip back at o mph

Ok just spoken to the RTA the plates cost $32 and take 3 weeks to make.
Then you pick them up from the RTA.

I ve got one of those but it says Bike rack on it.
I have seen Ferraris with really narrow front number plates. Not sure if they are legal though.
Wonder what the smallest number plate is you can get through the RTA?
I have personalised plates that I got before the rip off days started so there is no annual cost. I am sure if I tried to get them remade in a smaller size I would trigger the special plate price and end up paying an annual fee.
There are companies that will make any size plate you want in any colour. Would probaly pass a cursory glance but not close up as they dont have NSW printed on them.

For any Victorians,
The link below from Vicroads.
Sect 221 (number plates) and 222 (mounting) sets out what's required.

Nsw Rta Scammers!
You wouldn't believe this but I called the RTA and asked them the cost of getting my standard issue plate remade into a silver on black premium to suit the car better, they not only charge $30 remake fee but also add on $100 per annum to the already $400 per annum I have been paying for 4 years! So...no new numberplate! They say the "matellic" plate cost $500 per annum. WHAT FOR?? Stuff them! What a jip! I will now be considering handing back the existing plates and getting standard issue next number plates so as to not pay those bastards 1 cent more than I have to!

I have a slim line front plate and have mounted it in the oil cooler opening.
This may not suit every one, but you could trim down a std sized metal plate and mount it in the same place.

Mine is mounted on the front bumper with a pair of rubber lined circular clips.
This way it can be angled at any position (even flat) if you so wish.
If ever pulled over I could at least have the argument that:
1. The number plate is there; and
2. The wind must have blown it down.
Then quickly recover the phillips screwdriver from the boot and tighten it back into position - just simply too easy
Mind you I may be done for not displaying the plate in a viewable position - Ah well at least I tried!!!
