Jag front brakes
Any-one from Brisbane who wants to change those heavy jaguar calipers to something a lot lighter (ie nissan or similar) or trying to fit big brakes to small wheels?.
Contact TBS bonding at 18 Smith Street,Capalaba, phone 3390 2622. They know what they're doing. Sadly they're on the southside. :) |
Walking distance for me mate!!! Centre of the Universe:rolleyes:
Are they expensive? or like most things in life you pay for what you get Now the Bravia defies that rule sssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh |
Oi Uncle Pete, The bravia comes home tomorrow....wooohoooooo :)
About the brakes. No need to tell you what improvement there is in getting rid of 14lbs at each front wheel and what that does to improving the response of the front suspension. :p Price depends on what you want done. All the way from nissan to Brembo/AP aftermarket calipers. And whats this center of the universe thingy......swamp I tell ya.....was my old stamping grounds.....spent many a hour against the water tank behind the old school of arts learning how to drink beer. And, was the first drive-in where at I spent a few seconds learning how to....errr....ahmm, you really don't wanna know :) |
I replaced those boat anchors with Wilwood dynolights. Just had to make a caliper adaptor. My spindle is different from yours so a pattern won't help. Buy the calipers, make and adaptor out of wood, take it to a machine shop. 3/8" steel is min. thickness for the adaptor.

Hey Les,
Thanks for heads up on those guys in Capalaba. But I`ve already got some huge 330mm Rotors & polished Calipers ready to go in the front of the Cobra to replace the Jag gear. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...ed_Caliper.jpg By the way, if you call PCC, Uncle Pete, does that mean as a sign of respect to the elders of the Club, we have to call you Grand Dad Les  Looks like its my shout at breakfast %/ Regards Nick |
Well said Nick,
Ol Grandad Les - Now that sounds good:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: Plenty of bling going in that car of your's Nick!!! What number are you on London Road and I'll shoot round on Saturday to catch up (in the Cobra) |

Gawddd, whats those 330mm rotors for...stopping a locomotive?, and whats the caliper..alloy or cast iron, I'll assume alloy. Lemme get this right..you removed a 284mm rotor and 9Kg caliper designed to stop a 2192Kg ( 4832Lbs for uncle Pete) sports sedan and replaced it with a 9Kg rotor and lightweight caliper? to stop a 1200Kg (Approx) cobra. :o Nuh thanks Nick, I wanna get weight off the front suspension. The Jag stuff stops them very well if properly set up but it's soooo bluddy heavy. I've got a write up somewhere, published in Snaketales where the cobra owner was actually wanting to reduce his front braking force. The problem was he had too much front brake and the rears were not contributing to the braking force at all. Each to their own I guess but my aim is to improve the handling not the braking...got heaps of that taaaa. :o and....that's Mr Grand Dad to you thanks uncle nick :p Cheers mate...and it definitely is your shout. :JEKYLHYDE |
Holy ****, you fellas are GAME!
If you start 'sledging' Rebel1's name those other Dark Siders will get a sniff and slowly strangle our most outspoken leader. Then there will be no one left to tell the story of the 'beer can' engine. Maybe we should call him Mad Rebel1 Max. |
You tell'em Blair
Bluddy young whipper snappers they are. ;) But...wot ya expect?...one of em builds dams and roads and you know how that's all stuffed up and the other one plays with boxes all day....cardboard ones. :JEKYLHYDE I'll get square ..... they know not who they're playin wif ;) |
Now Les,
There's money to be made in those dams and roads and even cardboard boxes. That do you think pays for those snakes in the shed????? If it wasn't for those boxers we wouldn't even have met - now whose loss would that be. Now Blair - I've just returned from a day in your part of the world and I wonder why you even have considered a Cobra - rain rain rain!!!! |
What replaces that and box replaces boxers unless you are into dogs:confused: :JEKYLHYDE
That's what a 4am rise does to you:D |
Hey Pops, those are the same PBR calipers I used on the front of mine along with a set of 330mm rotors. Surprisingly the combination of 330mm rotors and aluminium hubs weighed abbout the same as the Jag jobbies. The PBR calipers weigh a fraction of the Jag ones. They are die cast aluminum with a cast steel slider bracket. The PBR caliper is physically about the same size as the Jag unit but it has a lot more pad surface area. The jury is out as to whether they stop any better than the Jag units though. Being a late model Holden Commodore caliper there is a big selection of pads available for them.
Worth considering even for use with stock Jag rotors. Cheers |
PCC you have me so confused right now!
|
Blair,
Confusion reigns upon all of us - clever or what!!! I apologise for my remote keyboard which has a liiiiiiiiiiiife of its own. |
Thank you for the explanation young Mike. :)
But, the nissan calipers with a Jag rotor will do just fine taaa loads. That means I get rid of 7Kg off each wheel to help the springs and shocks do their job. Those nissan calipers are made of the same stuff as those c.. ch... che..... ahmm .... beer cans :JEKYLHYDE The nissan calipers are only slightly smaller in pad area but still a 4 pot caliper and are similar to those used in the WRX's. Hopefully my theory will help with better control of the front end. :3DSMILE: |
Now WRX, yes and that is a very nice automobile.
What the Cobra lacks in handing the WRX makes up and more......... What the Cobra lacks in traction the WRX makes up and more...... What the WRX looks in panash the Cobra makes up and more. :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: |
Brake question
With all this talk about rotors, calipers, extra weight and so on I thought I might be able to sneak in a quick question... that is, with the Harrison brake setup (VR C'dore front, Nissan R32 rear) how does this rate in the stopping power and weight department respectively? I know the stud patterns are different, that's another barrel of monkeys for later!
Naturally the Cobra replica is a very light vehicle, but I guess I'm asking in terms of taking the car out on the track eventually. Thanks, Paul |
Sambo, I think you'll find the consensus being that the Harrison handles and stops veryyyy well with the standard setup. Even for track work.
Would only require a change of pads for the track I suspect. The cobra has about as much rubber as one can possibly put on the road. The brakes are designed for cars at least 500Kg heavier. I'm no engineer but that weight saving at a momentum of say 100kph makes a huge difference. |
Brakes are directly related to wheels size! Decide what size wheel you want. Most will recommend you go for a larger diameter rim because good quality ADR approved (Z rated is that right?) rubber is easier to get then say 15 inch rubber! You'll have little trouble fitting decent brakes (ie big rotors) within a 17-18 inch rim.
What I mean is don't expect to get a 330ml rotor in a 15 inch rim! http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._ml_Rotors.JPG |
Thanks mate, that put a few of my doubts to rest. I guess it's the Holden/Nissan front/rear thing which does my head in. The other contender is the G-Force with heavier Jag gear all around and that amazing new body mould they're using... but they're in Perth whereas I can probably make it up to QLD to check out the Harrison since I have family up there.
Cheers |
