[Train Crash]

Hello All,

After reading many of the previous posts, I thought I might say hello.

I haven't decided on which kit at this time, but should put an order in fairly soon. I will be trying to get a build completed for summer 2008/2009.

I live in Warrnambool, Western Victoria and was wondering if there were any members around my neck of the woods?

there are a couple of jokers down your way. Rob V has a clutch and brake joint in warnambool,Anton has a winery at NELSON ,and there are a couple of bloke`s somewhere in between that came to the SHELBY fest a year or so ago. Maybe you could call some one in the club to get contacts

Welcome Ian, look good and long before deciding on a maker.
You need an idea of what you want to do with your car, and a realistic idea of your limitations and budget.
I have found the build of my car to be great fun, I am sure you will too.

theyrs a cheap one on ebay at the moment bout 90% complete $18 500 could be worth a look but its in bundaberg,still worth a look though

I have also seen that one on ebay. It is imported from the phillipines and I think you will probably have a hard time geting it registered. If you can get it cheap enough it may be worth the extra work to get it adr compliant.

Thanks for the advise.

I have tried to catch up with Rod, however he is on holidays at the moment.

I have narrowed the field down to either a DRB or Harrison.

From what I have worked out so far the DRB might allow a mechanically challenged person like myself to do more of the build.

The Harrison with a L76, T56, R32/R33 sounds like an awesome package but may require a fair amount of assistance.

I'm more rev head that purist, so I just want to build the combination that has the best performance and handling.

I drive 68k.m. of the Great Ocean Road each day to get to work and a trick cobra might make the trip a little less painful in summer(if summer arrives this year).

Due to the expense involved and fact that I can't see myself parting with the cobra once finished, any advise that you may have would be very much appreciated.

Im only guessing (haveing not built either), but I wouldnt expect the harrision to be any more difficult to build then a drb.

Performance wise I think the Harrison is a proven performer, this years nationals will be interesting to see how some of the better sorted cars go. The opinion of most is that the harrison has a better shape then the drb - although it is certainly not perfect (If there was a perfect kit, not just shape, in Oz, I dont think anyone would ever consider importing one from the US - see other recent thread)

All I can suggest is you really MUST see them in the flesh, and talk to as many people as you can to make a well informed decision.

Harrison is not a difficult Cobra to build, Warwick is keen to make it as easy as possible so includes mounting points for all major components. Choice of engine mounts, gearbox mounts, diff mounts, all suspension mounts, steering rack mounts, steering column mounts, brake booster/master cylinder mounts etc etc.

DRB would be just as easy.

Ian, I've replied to your PM with my opinion.

Actually over the past few years the Nationals have been dominated by a cheap Harrison Cobra and a number of relatively cheap DRB Cobras. With more big dollar cars expected this year, it will certainly be a case of David vs Goliath yet again. A lot of people think you need big dollar/big HP cars to win, but that's certainly not the case. We are talking a number of top five Nationals cars are $50k builds or less. Actually the Harrison is a less than $40k buid. And a number of these cars have much less power than a stock LS1.

It's all about driving ability/familiarity with the car, and the fine tuning you can do with these cars. Plus a bit of luck that you have no major problems on the weekend. Certainly the money you spend, the easier it all is, but it certainly doesn't guarantee anything.

Some of the drivers at the Nationals are seasoned compaigners, having done 1000's of track km's in their Cobras. Some have even done 10,000's km's. And a number have been racing Cobras for many years.

I like the fact it's not the person with the most money that wins.

I have just received my Harrison DAYTONA kit from Warwick, very good build quality (like his Cobra's). I have an RMC cobra and if I was building another I would go for the Harrison. In my opinion they have a nice shape and would be easy to build. I think the DRB is a little bit too different (shape wise) when you compare it to other kits. Have you seen the Classic Revival? Another very nice car. They both have for and against.

I'm envious driving the Great Ocean Road to work. I live in both Mt. Gambier and Geelong and drive through Warrnambool usually around twice a week. May catch up.

My daughter works at TAFE in Warrnambool and lives in Port Fairy so I'm down there a lot.

I'm usually in the XR8 ute or my Cobra if the weather is good so could do the Great Ocean Road also.

Rob V. is on the outskirts of Warrnambool west off Carramut Rd left. Anton is on the Portland to Nelson Road.

Good luck with your choice. I would take the time to see all the options at the Nationals, or wait until the Shelby Fest. Look at the different cars and talk to the owners..

Then hit the Great Ocean Road....
