Default Accelerator Pedal

As I move to thinking about ordering the motor for my Harrison - it will be the L76 - I am thinking about the accelerator pedal. The one I have already fitted is a cable-linked Commodore pedal. BUT it seems that this motor has a 'fly by wire' accelerator pedal. While I could get and fit that, I was wondering what others among you are doing in this regard? I guess either could be fitted but what are the implications of the choice?

Gday Merv,

I believe you have 2 options. Run and LS1 computer with cable throttle, or the L76 computer with fly by wire. There are a bunch of things that need to be changed if running an LS1 computer (crank reluctor wheel, knock sensors), so if starting from scratch I think the fly by wire with L76 ecu would definately be a better option. Im not sure if you can run a cable throttle with the L76 computer (Its the "E38" ECU).

The electronics side of the pedal isnt that difficult - there are just 6 wires to run from the pedal to the ECU. Some fly by wire cars have an intermediate throttle control, but the L76 doesnt. The engine harness comes with only one plug for the ecu, the other plug (that takes the throttle input, MAF, and lots of other things) can be purchased easily from the US or there are local sources (sideshow) . I THINK I have all the wiring figured out on paper and am happy to share. Last few pieces of the puzzle fell into place wth the help of some guys on the LS1 forum.

You can get sidey to make up your harness for you complete. I like a challenge and Im a complete tight arse as well so as long as I dont smoke the ecu on startup I should save a few dollars.

Definitely easier to go the stock VZ Commodore setup with the fly by wire pedal for the L76. They can be picked up for around $120 complete with a (crappy) pedal, return spring, gudgeon, etc. As Andrew mentioned you still need the loom and that's not cheap.

Merv, while you're at it, would you mind ordering a 2nd crate engine for me please?

i have all parts needed to get your l76 running

if yr just after pedals theyre 80 bucks

but as a rough guide if u just have an engne u will need to spend around 2500 to get all looms suited for a cobra pedal ecu security removed
maf meter etc etc

theres alot of s h i t u need which some people dont know about

and unless u know people some things are hard to get done

Heres a basic list of what you need - might be a few things missing:

Pedal
belt tensioner\belt
alternator (ls1 or use a smaller one)
P/S pump if running PS
engine harness
oil dip stick and tube
starter
maf sensor (if using maf)
front O2 sensors (2) - "supposed" to run rear o2 sensors
E38 (ecu) - Needs to be programmed without vats etc
Engine mounts (rubber donut things)
right hand engine mount bracket - in most? installations you need the corvette type bracket, as the holden one puts the engine off centre.
Bolts to hold everything on!

If wiring it yourself (try www.currentperformance.com for all this):
Pedal connector
Maf connector
2nd ECU connector
OBD2 connector
relays\fuses (Im using their stand alone fuse relay module)

My suppliers - bay city holden (frankston) had great prices on the harness ($250) and tensioner, pedal etc, found alternator\ecu\ps pump\starter on ebay, current performance, and www.rockauto.com.

Andrew, those looms from Current Performance... did you order the LS2 loom for the Aussie L76? Which configuration did you go with? Feel free to PM/email me with further information.

Paul - current performance do do a complete stand alone setup (thats not what I got though).

I did email them about it and they said they could adapt to L76 (just involved moving a few sensors). I wasnt convinved as some of the wiring diagrams Ive seen have quite a few different pin outs when comparing OZ\L76 wiring vs say corvette LS2 E38 wiring. All I ordered from them was the missing plug for the ecu, pedal, obd2 connetor and their fuse relay module. The wiring for that module as well is in that xl sheet I sent you (scroll right ).
