How big are ya rotors?
Hi,
went to kiwi race cars to have look at set up, noted their standard cobra's set up use's hq front stub axles/rotors, told thats heaps for a light car with willwood 4 pot front and 2 pot calipers rear, i'm fitting 17"rims so thought GO BIGGER,(worked that theory with motor too, alloy 427 waiting!) what hub can i fit to stub to take 330mm rotors/6 pot APcalipers. Or is this just making work/cost for myself? So how big are yours? Ever been left wanting more?
cheers glen

I started out with stock Mustang brakes - 11" rotors, and 73mm single piston calipers. For the street they were more than enough. I could easily lock them up at anything less than 40mph. But, I quickly burned them up on the road course.
Now I have Wilwood brakes - 13" 6 pot in the front, 12" 4 pot in the back. Excellent brakes. I'm not good enough to use them to their full capabilities yet. But I'm working on it

I think Phil Mizzi probably has the bigest brakes of the Aussie contingent. 360mm (14") front rotors with 6 piston AP calipers and 328mm (13") rears with AP 4 piston calipers.
Phil kindly let me have a turn at the wheel a while back and the brakes are incredible.
Cheers

I think Phil is running 18" or 19" rims to fit those monsters in.
I'm sticking with my 17" rims and have 328mm (13") rears with Hi-Spec 4 piston callipers. The fronts are 343mm (13.5") rotors with Hi-Spec 6 piston calipers.
The rears are on and I'm fabricating the brackets for the fronts. Initial checks show they will fit inside the 17" rims OK.
Cheers

Question. . . Do willwood calipers have weather seals yet or not ?
Does the HiSpec jobbies have seals ?
It's all good if you're racing and rebuilding constantly, but if you live in the rain belt
( central coast NSW) this "no seal" is no good.

The Wilwoods don't run dust seals. APs, Brembos, Harrops and the Hi-Specs have dust seals.
The Hi-Spec uses a fairly conventional external dust seal as you can see in the pic below. I wanted calipers with dust seals to maintain my ADR compliance. I liked the design of the hi spec because of their billet construction and hard anodized alloy pistons and caliper body. I figured if the were made to take the harsh conditions of the roads in the UK then they should last OK down here. Plus they look cool.
The AP caliper uses a second O ring in the piston bore close to the entrance to keep moisture an dirt away from the main seal. Many say this is a better system because the seals are more protected the heat generated by the brakes. The AP is probably the pick of the bunch if you can stretch your budget.
Cheers

I have got the 6 pot AP calipers on the front of mine with 4 pot AP on the rear, not sure what size rotors but i know that they were not cheap. They fit under my 17 inch rims.
Andy.

What do you Guys think are the biggest rotors l could run on my 16" wheels with Jaguar front and IRS rear suspension?
Also, how do l convert from IRS inboard discs to more conventional outboard discs?

Hey there Paul, i will going to see the car next week sometime (its still at the race workshop at the moment). I will take some photos and try to upload them. I have never been able to load photos on here before. Im sure Aussie Mike will be able to run me through the process. I will measure up the discs to see what size they are as well.
Beb - we have converted my car from the inboard discs to the outboard set up as well. i will get some photos of this as well when i am down there. I did find that the best way to start and to keep the track width and clearances the same was to machine down some original inboard rotors to act as spacers rather than starting from scratch and trying to make new spacers.
I havent seen the car for a little while, so i havent seen the rear conversion finished yet. i have been quite busy with work and a very sick daughter.
Talk soon,
Andy.

Paul,
i fitted AP's to my standard rotors on my SPF after cracking the Willwoods. I'm very happy with the result. Great pedal feel and performance.
Keith can give you the scoop.

I'm running 12" front and rear with Wilwood 4 pistons on all. Plenty of braking power for such a light car.

Did you slot your rotors or are they the standard SPF supplied rotors?

That's a good question, that we don't really have answers to.
One front and one rear caliper cracked. The front caliper started to make creaking noises during a track day and then progressively lost braking effect during the day. When we pulled it, we found a crack, on inspection, we also found a crack in a rear caliper.
The cobra is a light car, I don't think I am that hard on the brakes (others may disagree ).
So having already had a previous adventure with these brakes, I chose to upgrade to AP's, and am very happy with the result.
