Immobilisers

I am getting to the point where I will need to fit an engine immobiliser and probably some other antitheft systems. In the past I have used the ubiquitous "hidden switch" but I suspect I have to have more for Transport QLD. Are there any suggestions about the type and brand of immobilizer that folk have found satisfactory and passes muster with the authorities?

Merv you are right, it's required by ADR 82/00 that you have an immobiliser. And I know for a fact that your engineer will check you have it.

A 3 point unit is the go.

I supply the Rhino JAG unit for RCR cars. Great value and they are reliable. John has a Rhino in the Cobra he races and environment wise it doesn't get much harsher than that.

I use the cobra's traditional enemy the Mongoose. The better models can have added bits if you want to go for that sort of thing but the cobra's pretty plain in needs,

Went for this model particularly as it was on Shannon's really like list as well as meeting all the other needs. Worth keeping the insurer happy though.

Rhino came through for me..rego tests due in two days and I fried the immobiliser. I rang rhino and they sent me a new one without questions. after rego I returned the crook one. Rhino RES4601...meets all RTA requirements and has some extra features in there as well. I bought mine a few years ago so they're most likely better now. The price was pretty good too !

Thanks guys. So do we need a three point immobiliser or a 2 point? I gather an alarm is optional.

OK thanks. I will track down the 3 point ones around here. Can they be easily installed at home or do you need to have them installed? Just finished my wiring anyway.

i think for insurance purposes they need to be fitted by an auto elec.
check with shannons.

I've never had a problem with home fitted immobilisers with ICVs.

Also my last conversation with Shannon's is that they were not concerned about immobilisers and ICVs. It certainly doesn't change the amount of premium you pay.

when i did mine they asked for the receipt from the auto elec, that was nearly 5 yeras ago though

Yeah, I've never been asked. That's interesting. Technically with an ICV they could not force that issue, they are in essence home built cars.

They were not interested in immobilisers at all when I last contacted them 6 months ago.

But the problem with Shannon's is that you quite often get different information from different staff members.

there is no better immobiliser than the factory ones where the key has a chip and its matched to the ecu

most other immobilisers are easy to bypass

ive had to dojobs at peopleshouses and they have not been there and no keys

i say as long as its in neutral and i can get under bonnet i can usually get them started heheheh

Seems that the Rhino 3 point is effective and meets engineering and insurance requirements. I would like to fit it myself if possible, as moving the car around on trailer for everything is a pain! As long as I don't have get an auto electrician to do it again for the need of a receipt. Is there anyone who has recently registered a Cobra in QLD who can comment on this aspect?

Merv, you will have no problem with self fitment for QLD rego. We are just fitting one now to John's RCR GT40.

This product may meet your requirements. The "gold" version has a remote that allows you to select a trickle current that is not enough to start the car or disengage the battery, completely. I mounted mine inline under my car (not on the battery) making it completely invisible and unreachable without jacking up the car.

It has the added benefit of keeping my battery from running completely down when I forget to turn off my lights.
