Hi All
A mate of mine who's car i have recently painted won the SA Round 1
drift comp on the weekend and i am a big fan of the sport and would like to know what you guys think of the whole drift scene




This thing weighs 1100 kg and has almost 400kw at the wheels
Yes it is the guy who built my engine.

Takes a lot of practice, a lot of skill and some serious HP. Congrats to your friend, that's a huge achievement considering how competitive it is.

My brother competed in Drifting at Power Cruise one year. In a Cobra. Has anyone else given it a go at competition level?

I've tried to understand this version of motor sport but I just don't get it. Certainly not the fastest way around the track and the 'style' factor seems pretty subjective to me. If I want to watch some tyres being shredded, no offense but I'll take a Gary Myers burnout any day!

As an old Rally guy (Group G and Group A) I appreciate that Drift has taken rally driving techniques to the masses, however I agree with Sambo that tyre shredding doesn't rate high in the artistic stakes.

Sambo ,No offense taken every body has likes and dislikes but Have you actually been to an event. I have driven a track car around our local track Mallala and these cars do a quicker time over the sector that they drift than most circuit cars . The you tube link i have put on at about 20 seconds in you see my mates car go around a right hand corner. At that point he is doing 9000 rpm in 3rd and over 150kmh. That takes alot of skill . If you keep watching the clip they do this metres away from an opponent when they Battle each other.
Absolutely amazing for spectators instead of just seeing a freight train of cars going around.
I love circuit as much as drift.

Krait, That is some serious stuff but i think that is tyre shredding also
just on gravel instead. That guy has more driving talent in his finger than most of us have full stop.

400tt , That would be hard to do in a cobra .

Ledge,

One can never dismiss the skills required for each genre of motorsport. Personally I never understood drag racing, however those who do it have my respect.

What I liked about rallying is that encompassed all the good things about motorsport, it was pure. Big engines and big budgets didn't guarantee results, neither did big balls for that matter but they were certainly more useful

Sideways, flat out in 5th, down a logging road at the back of Bega in the middle of the night with a 100 ft drop off one side and trees on the other...priceless

I love any sport that has an engine although some are more exciting than
others i to respect any man or woman willing to go for it.
