wiper motor and arms
I am looking at alternatives for a wiper motor and arms, I am thinking about trying a british Leyland Mini wiper motor and chrome arms ( only 2 ) any thoughts on this one please.

If you go the old British version make sure you try and get new parts where possible, as the wear on the coil and gear parts can be high. That said the system seems to work ok.
A bloke near me used the standard fitting which the wipers attached to but modified the inside of these to allow solid rods to be fitted with adjustable couplings. This is one of the harder bits to get right on a cobra and even with his rods and adjustments it wasn't easy to make work properly. Cheers |

I used a combination of Mini and Landrover bits. Check with your engineer before going ahead with a two wiper system, I had it all nutted out then was told engineer will approve a 3 wiper system, but may or may not approve a 2 wiper system. I think it was a Range rover rear wiper motor that has the 110 deg gear wheel that works with the 3 wiper system, for the 2 wipers I think I worked out 125deg was needed. I found the rover wheel boxes worked a little better for me. I do have a surplus lucas wiper motor if you havent sourced one yet. Lionel. |
I used a system from an old triumpth I found down the back of a wreckers. It had the steel tubes and clamping wheel boxes. I only needed to buy a third wheel box and some new chrome trim rings. I made the extra tube out of copper pipe with a flare at each end.

I'd concur with talking with the engineer on number of wipers.
I thought I'd heard just after I got mine through engineering with three wipers that the requirement had been repealed and that you could build with two wipers again. Worth checking just to make the job easier at least. I sourced a new lucas motor here in Melbourne, still not sure if it a direct copy or from the revamped Lucas company. Anyway thinking about the load a three wiper system would have on a motor designed for two I though it worth the expenditure. Also bought new wheel boxes and sourced a longer jag drive coil to enable me to link all the three boxes properly. Didn't know about the rover pin option and manually repositioned the drive pin to suit the sweep needed. My three blades get progressively shorter accross the screen but they don't look too silly and the system works. Cheers |
The three wiper system with the Lucas or "Lucas type" wipers seems to have stood the test of time. It is worth thinking about a new set as they can wear out and are difficult to get at one the dash is in. There are heaps of diagrams and info on installation. There was an earlier post on this topic I believe.

I used the motor from my Commodore donor car and built a slider mechanism to convert the rotary action to push-pull. The throw is adjustable by 2 bolts so that I can adjust to get the correct wiping angle.
I did this because: 1. Cheapo - part of the donor car. 2. Will always be cheap and easy to get replacement motor. 3. Plugged straight into the donor harness giving full functionality (variable speed etc). http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._mechanism.jpg |
Good idea ! Three wipers were to meet the RTA standard to cover a specified area in front of the driver...but they had to also clear an area to the left for vision as well

all this talk of wearing bits out, i gotta ask how often are you planning on driving in the rain:rolleyes: the only time mine have been on is when i took it to transport for its inspection!! may be i should drive it more :LOL: but with no soft top or any other protection it aint goin out in the rain, not to mention those extremly grippy bf goodrich tyres:D

The plan for mine, when I get it back, is to get a lot of use.
I do plan on having a soft top ready for our 4 seasons in one day weather and a heater - I'm just not going to harden the f@#* up, so there!! |

Wipers and the Engineer......
Having recently passed engineering I know a bit about the wiper situation in Victoria:eek::eek:
I had to have the complete wiper sweep test done (at considerable cost) might I add. It consists of 3 views, A,B,C they all have a certain percentage of cover that needs to be obtained. So if anyone requires a wiper sweep report for a Harrison Daytona Coupe let me know :3DSMILE::3DSMILE:... STIFFY |
Who made you do that Stiffness?
I'm sure Enkelmans told me when I was done with engineering the two blade wiper option was back. Am equally sure Bernie at best just tested my widdling boys and wipers whilst he was brake testing. He certainly didn't do any review, measurement or so forth in the factory, as I was there through the whole assessment process. I guess they probably react to VicRoads specific issues and needs from time to time. |
Slowy, best not divulge the various "interpretations" that some engineers afford... the walls have eyes. ;)

This appears to be the current ADR rule regarding wipers:
"24. WINDSCREEN WIPERS AND WASHERS Every motor vehicle having a windscreen must be fitted with a powerdriven windscreen wiping system. This provision does not apply to LA, LB, LC, LD or unenclosed LEM vehicle categories. Every motor vehicle having a windscreen wiping system must have a windscreen washing system that can direct water on to the windscreen within the area swept by the windscreen wiper. The device or devices for operating the wipers and washer must be able to be controlled by the driver in the normal driving position."
