My Trip to ShelbyFest
Ok - this post is a little late in coming due to a number of thing but I thought some of you might still like to see some photos.
This photo is emblematic of the sprint day http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ll09-%2013.JPG Victoria had just been through some severe fires, on the way to Winton from Melbourne you spend quite a lot of time driving through burnt out areas. The track conditions were hot and fast, causing many cars to boil or cook their brakes. I was sharing my drive with my brother Peter and we generally didn't do full sessions to preserve the car a bit but overall it did about the same laps as the most hard working cars and I was very pleased with the way it pulled up (although I have since found a leak in the - almost new - radiator) The hot track and a new set of tyres got me around some corners at quite a clip - we had previously set the car up to roll over the wheels a bit more to suit the street tyres - with the new set I scrape the sidepipes. http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...est09-%208.JPG Following Stiffy - I figure that he must have a few smooth lines to keep him in quality tail...%/ http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...st09-%2027.JPG Armin makes it an international event by travelling all the way from Tasmania http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...st09-%2025.JPG My nephew David checks my vision after observing some of the lines I took during the session Gav is in the foreground - if you listen carefully you can hear the faint '...there is no spoon...' chant http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ix09-%2018.JPG I was however not the only one to try alternative lines http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...rs09-%2029.JPG Meanwhile back in the pits... El presidente Tony prepares to 'wang' Lindsay (who looks like he's still recovering from going through the sound barrier) http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ix09-%2010.JPG Stiffy does mind meld with Phil's car - thus ensuring later calamity... http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ix09-%2017.JPG The fast racing was causing lots of fuel consumption - Peter had a spare jerry can of Pulp that Leigh and Phil needed to keep going (thirsty things those LS's) A highlight for me was the shootout - here 'gentleman racer' Leigh is making room for Peter during the qualifying - karma? http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...st09-%2006.JPG Peter came in and I went out - only got my out-lap recorded when the session was red-flagged due to Pauls unfortunate mishap. http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ll09-%2023.JPG http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ll09-%2028.JPG http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ll09-%2035.JPG Ultimately Peter qualified 5th and me 6th for the 10min session - so I left it to him Phil - who's car was the recipent of Stiffy's mind meld - had qualified for the final five shootout but was unable to start due to a lack of tyres phil loses tyre http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...rs09-%2041.JPG that left 4 in the staging area for the standing start (individual lap) shoot-out Ross went first and was looking great until the last moment when he left the track then it Lindsay's turn.. http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...rs09-%2051.JPG This left Peter and Leigh - I took the opportunity to ask Leigh if I could get that extra fuel back and he told me I'd just have to wait a moment.... Great photos!
I will be back next year. Ben |
Nice report and some great photos. Well done. :)
That Kirkham sure is pretty, but I just reckon the stance isnt quite right - sitting a bit low at the back or something: http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...ix09-%2004.JPG |
Nice Post

You have identified an egregious omission - I haven't written about Friday and your generously showing me the way around the track - thanks for that. http://www.cobracarclubvic.org.au/Sh...st09-%2013.JPG (now with wings) LoBelly |
Please tell... What was the fire story? OUCH!
Spookypt |
Just a normal Victorian hot lap!!
|
What Cobra should look like !
Quote:
i take it youve never seen a real Cobra. |
Quote:
And still hasn't. After all, as nice as a Kirkham is, it is still not a "real Cobra" |
I've seen several real original cobras on my trips around the world.
Nice car but I think it's sitting a little too low in the back. Cheers |

The stance on this one looks right to me: http://www.kirkhammotorsports.com/42.../baregal16.jpg Cheers |

Whats your CSX number on that Cobra there soulman? Its a Kirkham - definately a real Kirkham though (Although that doesnt change the fact it still needs the arse jacked up 2 inches) :) (That said i dont think its any less a cobra then the continuation cobras - the only real ones IMO are the originals) |
[quote=Tenrocca;946876]:LOL::LOL: Amen to that.
Whats your CSX number on that Cobra there soulman? FYI..Tenrocca. Full registration in Vic. REGO Label Says.. 1965 Ford Roadster VIN CSX 3085 Im very honoured to call it Kirkham, as the guys build the Shelby bodies and chassis and a heap of other stuff for Shelby. The Shelby of old unfortunetly is long gone..All their is now a marketing machine that would put the great mans name on anything. The Kirkhams are a class act and are replicating the same energy that Shelby had 40 years ago. I bought my car from the States registered as a 65 Shelby- is it a real Cobra ..Definetly. Is it Genuine Cobra..Definetly not. Is it better than a continuation Shelby, if you know about qaulity and engineering..Definetly. As far as it sitting too low...thats how racing cobras were set. Im offended if you think my BUM looks out place.. Surely i can get someone else stirred up out there. Soulman. |
Give me a saggy arsed Kirkham anyday ...... now how to jack up the wifes arse 2 inches  **)
Cheers |
Do you mean like this one? :)
A fully-restored and wearing the Reims livery 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe CSX2601 will be auctioned at the 22nd Dana Mecum Original Spring Classic Auction taking place May 13-17, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind. High performance collector car specialists Mecum Auction says it expects the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe to be attract the highest bid ever paid at a public auction for an American automobile. The show also will be broadcast live on Friday, May 15, 2009 during the company’s series “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More". The organizers are extremely positive the car will surpass the $11 million paid for a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder and that it will fetch between $12 and $15 million. |
[quote=Tenrocca;946865]haha - dont get me wrong Id take your kirkham over just about any other replica - but Id just jack the arse up an inch or 2. Just my opinion though and if you think it looks right thats all that really matters....hell there are people out there that think a DRB actually looks like a cobra too....:3DSMILE:
The stance on this one looks right to me: maybe it's too low cause your fat ass would make it bottom out  |
Not worth getting into a p!ssing match here. You have a lovely car Soulman and should be proud of it. Set it up however you want.
I love this video of 2 original comp cars. Lots of great detail to see in this video. Cheers |
