Many thanks Paul. Did you find a difference in the action? Which oil is recommended. Thought I would fill it before installing it. Much easier.

Merv, I didn't drive it with the R33 centre, sorry. In my S15 it hooked up nicely but wasn't dealing with big V8 torque. Apparently in the Nissan S15 service manual it says, "use API GL-5 : Never use LSD exclusive gear oil. Use standard differential oil." I've read similar comments in many places. I believe the viscous LSD oil contains modifiers to deal with the clutch packs and this is not needed in the mechanical LSD.

Edit: I let a bit of the oil out of mine and it looked and smelled OK so I haven't changed it.

A bit more info from a Nissan rear end specialist. He advises that the halfshafts/flanges from the R33 (4.1) will fit on to the splines of new diff (3.5 viscous) but that they are off-set, with the LHS being shorter and the RHS longer. Thus the existing axles won't fit! So I will need to get the axles that go with the new R33 DE (3.5) diff. That should do it.

Les, Paul and Warren - I have just measured the width of the two differentials and they are almost the same at 317-316 from axle flange to axle flange (tiny bit of parallax in there). The flanges themselves on the both sides of both diffs are the same (!) at 50mm. Looking better than the above concern. Both are R33 so that should not be a surprise maybe.

The pinions are off center and I'm interested what that offset is.

I am not sure Les as I haven't pulled the back plate and measured differences, but they will be different. My initial joy that the flange to flange measurements were the same on both diffs was lost when I pulled out the flange shafts from both diffs. The old one (both RHS) was longer in the diff (see pics; old one on top and new one below) and new one shorter. I assume that will be the reverse for the LHS ones. So it seems I will need to get new axle shafts that have a 6 bolt pattern - that is using the drive flanges that came with the new diff - and that are the same length as my existing ones! Damn! Spline counts are the same.

It is 19 and 13 cm Les. Paul still trying to confirm oil type. Hypoid diff synthetic and LSD say the specs at the service centre. I thought you used non LSD?

In my old Datsun rally car with a R200 LSD diff we used Amsoil.

Merv for the helical (non viscous) diff you want plain old 90 weight diff oil. The fancy stuff goes in the viscous diffs to deal with clutch packs - that's my conclusion after lots of reading. I'll confirm with Nissan before changing mine just to be sure.

All done! Took longer than I thought, but lying on the garage floor with the car on axle stands is a real test. Thanks to Scott I have a (less usual) Nissan 3.55 R33 diff and drive shafts. Thanks also to Warren and Paul for putting up with my repetitive questions. The new diff had exactly the same outer dimensions as my original R33 so the drive shaft fits perfectly and all the mounting bolts aligned easily. Used the ally bushes on the front of the diff and poly ones on the rear. Raising a big diff under a car and bolting it in, is awkward work.

Drives very differently now, with ability to rev out more through the gears and first, second and third are more useable. It really transforms the drive of the car. I may need to re-calibrate/check my speedo now however.

Good job Merv, heavy little suckers them diffs eh!
Glad to hear that the change is worth while & yes you will ahve to re calibrate the speedo if you want more accuracy, especially these days with the "flash for Cash" safety (!??!) devices that are around these days.
