I finally got one! Introduction.

Hi Everyone,

You may have noticed that i have posted a few questions lately about an RCM kit. Well, today i won the auction on ebay for $6k and provided the place exists when i go to pick it up next week, my journey will begin!

I thought i should formally introduce myself. My name is Liam and i live on Sydney's Northern Beaches (Newport). My qualification is Civil Engineering and i work as an auditor and consultant for Quality, Environmental and OHS certification to Australian and ISO standards.

I plan to do everything on this car myself except trimming the seats, and who knows, maybe i will do a TAFE course and trim those myself also.

I have spent a lot of time working on cars, including body work, mechanical, electrical and engine management but i am far from being anything more than a tinkerer. I have never worked with fibreglass (other than surfboard repairs) and i have never built a car from scratch, so i am looking forward to the challenge.

Id say i will be spending a lot of time on here researching and asking questions, and i am looking forward to getting to know my fellow Australian members.

Quality will be as a result of your handi-work or lack of it

Environment ... no way you want a beast not a mouse and sox, coks and nox go out the door after engineering!

- you should see the sticker I was given at engineering to warn the passenger they were choosing to ride in a dangerous car .... because of a lack of frontal impact testing - I did that after engieering, the car is safe - lol

Yes, its an RCM kit. Not much to tell at this stage other than its a body that i am told requires more work than most to get flat for painting.

Chassis will be off to the engineer pretty quickly for testing. I want to get that right before i start on the Jag suspension.

Im driving down to pick it up next weekend (18th July).

What have you done son?
Strap yourself in, as if my last 3 years is anything to go by you are in for one hell of a ride even before you start the little bugger up.
No money left to buy anything else, constantly going to bed late and trying not to annoy the wife, reading anything you can get your hands on with a cobra name, looking and dreaming.
Greatest 3 years of my life.
And there is never a dumb question you can ask on this site, well can not be any dunmber than some of the ones I have asked anyway.

Before you send your chassis off for engineering ask the guy your buying it off if he has Lauries (RCM) chassis eng report because when I spoke to Laurie about 12 months ago he told me he supplies a chassis/beam test report with his kit.
Stick with this site as you will be surprised how much you will learn even without asking.
I'm only a few months into my build but you will find you will learn two things fairly soon after you start, patience and how to smile every time you open your wallet.

At this stage i am looking at what i believe you refer to as the dark side. most likely 6ltr holden out of a wreck but i want to talk to the engineer about it first. My plan is to buy a Jag doner to get all the suspension and brakes out of, then a damaged 6lt holden for the motor, gear box, seats, pedals, steering components and what ever else i can salvage (overflow tanks, fuse box, carpet etc). I am not a millionair and i work full time so i expect the built to take about 3 years.

The guy i am getting it from doesnt have any documentation. The engineer said it would be about $300 for the test so im happy to pay that as at least i know i wont have any trouble down the track proving its the same chassis. Also its a good chance to meet the engineer and ask a few questions about ADR's.

Gawd, not another Chev/Holden powered Cobra.

Just because they are easy to install, light, make heaps of power out of the box and go like stink, does not mean one should put em in Cobra.

Least that's what the other mob reckon.
