Cool Starter Relay Location

What's everyones opinion on where to locate my starter relay? On the firewall in the engine compartment, somewhere else under the hood, under the dash... etc? What are the reasons for your decision? All opinions appreciated... thanks.

Mike

Mike, plan your wiring installation so if you must get to connections later on, ...it's easy. Think about if you have to pull the engine or do some other work later on, make it accessable.
Some folks like to hide everything so you don't see any wiring, but went with the idea that wiring should be easy to get at after the car is done. The firewall is a great place for the relay.

B&B installs it under the passenger side dash (at least they did in the LA Exotics days). If you're not putting in a glove box, access is reasonably easy. As Bill says, it provides a cleaner look.

Default relay

I agree with Bill. Put it where you can get to it for service. Mine is under the passenger seat with a fuse box with 17 fuses and 4 relays, along with a seperate fan-horn relay box and alt fuse strip. Seat folds foreward with wires under "false" floor. Can check or change a fuse while sitting in drivers seat. Ron

I mounted my relay on the engine side of the firewall. It is easy to service and looks fine as if it belongs there.

It also depends on if you have a power disconnect switch on the dash. If the main wiring needs to enter the passenger compartment, then under the dash makes sense. If not, I agree with the passenger firewall under the dash.

I used one of those mini Hi Torque starters and don't have a solenoid to fool with. The starter works great on my 351W.
