I have a Holley Street Avenger with nary a problem...Holley makes a great carburetor.
Plug gaps, distributor caps, octane and timing won't be your problem. Before you throw too much money around blindly to fix something, I would definately replace the fuel filter. I would also run a tank of gas through it first before I spent any more money.
