Default Awful steering. Bad enough to not want to drive the car.

I own BDR 1079 and I'm the 2nd owner.

Thank you-

RG

The BDR has an excellent reputation for suspension and steering. If yours is not working well, then it's not a problem with the engineering. Either something was not installed correctly, or one of the components is incorrect.

Put the car on jack stands, and remove the coil overs. Put jack stands under the lower arms to hold the hubs at about ride height. Now you can work the steering without any load on it. If the steering moves easily, then it could be something as simple as a bad alignment.

Start by looking at each individual component - from steering wheel to tie rod end. Are they all the correct components? Are they the correct combination of components?

Have some one turn the steering wheel while you observe each component through it's normal range of motion. That should help you find exactly where the binding is occurring. Do that with the hubs at ride height, both compressed, both extended, and one up + one down.

Disconnect the rack from the spindles. Then disconnect the column from the rack. When the steering wheel begins to move easily, you've located binding component.

The coyote is a mod motor which is huge. Did the steering have to be modified because of this? I'm thinking it did.

RG,
I have BDR 1167 with a Coyote/Tremec combination and standard (i.e. no PAS) steering installed by Vintage and the steering is great - no binding and very smooth from lock to lock.
I would give Jay or Brian a call at Vintage to see if they have come across this issue before.
I hope you get it sorted.

Andy

I had a similar experience with my car BDR #1133. I verified that there was no binding in the steering going lock to lock with the front end raised up. I then discovered a two inch difference in the height adjustment of the front springs. Readjustment of the front solved my problem. Nevertheless, it does take a while to develop the Popeye arms that are needed to maneuver the car at low speeds.

Does the strut top hat bearing move freely? Is the top of the strut binding with the weight of the car on it? On a BMW there is a concaved washer between the strut hat and bearing. If it is installed upside down or missing, the strut binds and digs in when rotating. I am not positive if BDR is similar in this area or not. Maybe Cashburn will weigh in. Just a thought.

Road speeds have always given enough vibration through the wheel that it can put my hands to sleep.

Use the build manual to compare the parts. If the builder mixed and mis-matched components, they may not play well with each other.

If the shaft does not rotate perfectly, that's part of the problem. The shaft should be well located with proper bearings and should not move around. Especially that up and down motion you mentioned. You should be able to crank on the wheel in any direction and it won't move.

I would start by completely removing the column - from the steering wheel to the rack. Inspect every component as it comes off. Figure out what is not tight, or what is missing. Use the build manual to guide you there.

The vibration could be a separate issue, or it could be part of the same problem. It could be something as simple as a wheel weight missing. Or it could be that the tie rod is the wrong one, and doesn't fit the tapered hole in steering arm, allowing it to bounce around.

You do have a build manual, don't you? If not, you need to get one. I have a service manual of one kind or another for all of my vehicles.

1st tighten the u bolt under the dash that locks the column in place.

Once that is resolved make sure the brackets they gave you have the rack level. Wrong combo can cause rack to be uneven and induce bind.

Once those are taken care of, verify the tie rods are not binding or the lower ball joints.

First let me say that I'm not familiar with BDR. A lot of good advice given. Obviously I wouldn't drive it with out have the steering fully diagnosed and sorted.

I have seen a lot of steering systems with multiple U-Joints that are out of phase. This will cause binding. This wouldn't be the cause of all of the symptoms.

Jay is 100 Percent. Tighten the U Bolt under the dash first thing.

Maybe I missed it, but what is the exact complaint?

Darty? Hard to steer? Sloppy?

Etc...

I have 35 and it shakes at 60mph according to this old thread this was an ongoing issue years ago and I don't know how backdraft fixed it
front end vibration
On such an early car there are many things to look at and potentially upgrade. I would highly recommend you reach out to BDR HQ for guidance on the care of the car. That predates our experience with BDR so I cannot offer the same level of insight.

You are correct about the lack of definition...and I love seeing all of these "expert" suggestions on what to fix without a test drive or really knowing what the problem is...

Some guys just love to talk...

When you get to the party late, keep your mouth shut so you look like less of a schmuck... The original poster included info on his problem when he made the post long ago. Since then he has edited the post, maybe because the simple suggestions worked or it was something more obvious

Refer to post #15...

As I say...some folks just love to hear themselves talk.
