Default Broken Diff

Yesterday I lost power to the back wheels. After I got the car pulled home and raising the car rear end , this the what I found..............Jeeze, what made this happen?? Do I need a whole new Diff and half shaft? Is this something I can do with limited experience with this type of suspension?

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Vance

Even without pictures, the general rule is "If it looks bad, it usually is."

Yup. If you're talking broken diffs and half-shafts for sure!

Well hard to say with out pictures, is it just a snapped half shaft or did you snap the casing too?

What were you doing when it failed?

Okay so this picture shows the half shaft came loose or bolts snapped. Club Cobra - Axel 427's Album: Axel 427 Pics - Picture

This one shows the bigger issue! Time for new rear diff. by the looks of it.

Sorry about the pics....having a hard time getting them uploaded. I was driving maybe 40 mph in 4th gear and all hell broken loose....banging, thumping, bucking. What could cause the diff to break like this?

Have you performed any healthy standing starts resulting in axle hop? Looks like you had a metal fatigue or fracture some how.

Looks like someone might have been doing some spirited starts or trying burnouts at some time, but I'm just making a guess.
There was a pic on this site a long time ago of a shaft twisted like a pretzel. I actually downloaded it and kept it for a long time to remind me what can happen, especially with sticky tyres.
Can't find it anymore...

Ya I snapped mine in half on the drag strip at launch back in 08, these rear IRS suspensions aren't really designed for the strip or hard launches.

It is better to snap a half shaft though than what the OP has. Rather replace a shaft than entire dif. or worse.

Bad things can happen fast in these cars. To the OP...Axel 427: you do have a scatter shield and a driveline safety hoop, right?

Yeah.... I know it looks like I was doing some hard launches, but I wasn't or haven't...
I bought this car used with 331 miles on the OD. I recently jacked the rear up to find why my speedo was working. One of the 2 wires on connector going to sender was not connected. Is it possible the way I lifted the rear to cause this? I jacked the right rear side up first putting support under tire then the same for left side. Dang..... what a chocolate mess!!!

Umpteen thousand miles of use? You do know that the BDR diffs and suspension are used parts, right?

No. Jacking will not cause a diff failure. Do not blame yourself.

And who sells a car with 331 miles? Why does someone buy a car and not drive it? I do not understand this. Be it BDR, SPF, ERA, Etc. What is he point of having a toy you do not use? Of course, if you know there is an issue and save the wear and tear for the next owner that is one explanation.

"One of the 2 wires on connector going to sender was not connected." And hat goes a long way in explaining why the miles showed "331"....there is a LOT more on the chassis but the odometer didn't work so TMU.

Vance,

Looks to me as if the 6 bolts holding the half shaft spacer backed out. When you install these everything (both diff flange female threads and the half shaft male threads) should be degreased and you should use thread locker and the torque bolts.

The broken part looks like the rear diff cover from the pic.... This is an easy part to replace. I am guessing half shaft came loose and since you were doing about 40mph the half shaft hit the diff cover ear with enough force to break it...

Yes, these are used parts and things break (I broke the R/H halfshaft at the Scottsdale, AZ Goodguys Autocross event in March). But unless you are on drag slicks / R Compound Tires / or just dropping the clutch at high RPM's things shouldn't be breaking.

Also, I'm over in Haslet... maybe 15 miles from you.... Now that Jay Nordstrom is no longer with us I guess I am the local BDR expert....

Pic is from Raleigh, NC Goodguys Autocross event two weeks ago.

Kevin.....

No.... I did not know BDR installs used parts. You would think for the price of these cars all components would be new...... My speedo was working when I got the car. The more I think about it, I guess I was bent over when I bought this car. I hope I don't find more surprises down the road. Sh#t!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your replies

I had a similar problem last year but I hard launched with super sticky tires on a not so smooth road (yes stupid). I think I have the front cover that you broke if you are interested. I upgraded to a Diffsonline Differential and hardened output shafts. Already had upgraded half shafts but you should get some of those too. Call me if you need any input, I did the job and it isn't so bad.

Yes, I'm interested. I'm trying to a guy over here to look at it and hoping there's not to much parts to replace. I'll keep you and informed and thanks.

Did you ever get your car back together? What actually broke, the diff or just the cover?

Yep.....I got the rear end back together. Grey 65 was correct when he said "looks like the 6 bolts holding the half spacer back out." Kinda makes you wonder if these were torqued to begin with. The half shaft apparently hit the wing part of the Diff cover and broke it. I bought a new Diff cover and bolts, and gear oil and re-assembled. The car runs great now, except now I noticed transmission fluid leaking around the rear seal of the transmission. I'm not sure if the previous problem caused this............. Dang!!!!
How hard is this seal to change out ? Anyboby got suggestions?
