Default Redline at start

I started the car up and the floor mat was holding the gas pedal down and it went right to redline on a cold 70 deg engine. I quickly turned the key off in about 3 seconds. It seems ok but every little sound has me thinking did I do something really bad to cause the engine to weaken?

1) I looked for the MSD control box to see what the REV limit was set to but I can't find it any where. Where is it located?

2) What is the default rev limit setting.

3) Should I be concerned ?

That sucks but I wouldn't worry to much. The MSD box is under the dash behind the carpet in the passenger foot well. The carpet is held on by Velcro.

First up, you need to do something about that mat, very dangerous.

I wouldn't want one of my cars going to the rev limiter at cold start.

It might be under the dash not foot well depends on builder. Probably has the 6500 chip in it. Basically same thing happened to me 8 years ago but while driving.... carpet got stuck under foot pedal pegged thee throttle until I immediately turned the key off. No issues after though.

Lesson learned and the mats out of the car, All backdraft owners be aware this can happen to you so check the mats before every ride.

I had an extra piece of rubber sewn on the back of the mats as well as one for a foot pad. Helps stabilize the mat for the same reason mentioned of it sliding and getting stuck under a pedal, but I'm sure there's another solution. It cost me about $50 a mat, but it was better than wrecking because a mat got stuck under a pedal!

The older MSD boxes have a plug in chip for the rev limiter. It is typically whet with a number (the rev limit) on it that can be replaced. The newer MSD boxes may have a dial with an adjustable rev limit on it. If you are not seeing any drop in oil pressure, then probably not a major problem. If you burned a bearing, oil pressure should suffer and you will start to hear noises that will not sound good. More than likely you have survived a potential major problem.

I had the same thing happen. The newer floor mats seem to stay in place better.

Throwing my old mats out and am not risking doing that again. If I was driving that could have been deadly.

I installed snaps into my floor mats to prevent them from moving around or lifting. Similar to these :
Snaps, Grommets & Hardware at Tarp & Cover Superstore

BTW a simple cheap fix is 2 zip ties through 2 holes poked in the MAT attached to the seat mount bracket...KISS folks!

My original mats wanted to move all over the place... just from using the pedals... AND began falling apart when the car didn't even have 1,000 miles on it. VERY poor design. The aftermarket floor mats that BDR sells now are very nice... and stay in place MUCH better. Purchased them a while back... pricey... but could not be happier. (Note*... per website... mats will not fit roadsters before build #30).
