Powersteering
Hey, does anyone know about a rack which has a electrical powersteering that would fit into a Backdraft?

Finding a steering rack the correct width might be a problem. If it isn't correct you will have bump steer problems. You might find it easier to fit a EPAS unit which attaches to your existing steering column. There seem to be plenty of options if you do a google search. Also quite a bit on youtube

Be careful about having enough room for the motor. I put power in my car using a ford tbird/mustang rack and a chevy ps pump (to match my engine).
It works really well, making it possible to drive the car around town or at an autocross. |
Kind like putting an elevator in an outhouse.

Electric Steering
My 2014 Backdraft came with electric steering that was installed by the previous owner who was a machinist. It was an under the dash unit and he did a great job putting it in. Although it made the wheel very easy to turn, I didn't care for the way it felt and removed it. I went to an upgraded manual column and connectors while keeping my original rack. I love the way it feels. Easy to turn and very responsive. Feels like a sports car now. Just didn't have that good feel with the electric steering. Felt like a Lincoln Continental. Much better now.

I had electric power steering on my Lotus 7 replica. It was what came on it. It had only one turn lock to lock and with the power steering you could catch the rear when it was pretty far gone. It lacked any feel though but with the nearly open (cycle fenders) front wheels it was still pretty easy to place.
With top drivers (not me) the car I had won at least 12 national scca championships. |
I have a unit from a Saturn in my car with an adjustable knob to adjust how much assist you want. Really works great. When you are in tight areas, you crank up the assist and you can whip it around with one finger. I have 10" tires on the front. When you are going down the highway or taking those nice curves, you basically crank the assist to zero. This unit mounts between the column and rack. Not sure if it would work on a BDR or not.

i like the t bird power rack I have. It bolted on where the flaming river manual rack was. It has reasonable feel compared to the electric unit in the Lotus.

I used a hydraulic rack from a 2000 Escort ....correct 2idth ,exactly the right amount t of assist and a 3.1 turns lock to lock ..I passed on the electric units after reading about some crashes that have occured by the electric rack just turning on it's own at speed.

I've not read or found any claims on run-away EPAS but have read several low speed failures where the system went manual no-assist during a turn and the driver lost control.

There were some articles about Ford s that just turned at speed....l try find them again.....I was sold on electric..........but that scared me right off.

As a GM trained tech, I have seen and driven cars with electronic power steering failures. It is not a very nice feeling when this occurs, and disheartening to know it could happen at any time. It is bad enough we have electronics for engines and brakes etc, but electronic power steering is definitely not on my shopping list. |
I just ran across this from Flaming River. I really like the idea of adjustability, especially making it speed sensitive. While there's not much room to install it, it does look like it would fit in many Cobras.
