Backdraft Results at Run & Gun

Well guys, we did ourselves good. Special thanks to Jay Nordstrom (JAYSCOBRAS) for helping us through the weekend.

1st - Road Coarse Big Block
Fastest Road Coarse Lap of the Event - 107.45

Tony Martin (one of the owners of Backdraft Racing) did the driving duties in one of our production models with M3 upgrades to the brakes, half shafts, and rear swing arms. We did add a slightly stiffer spring package and solid motor mounts though. The motor was a 630 HP beast putting 510 HP to the ground. The pit duties were handled by Reg and Frank Dodd, though the car never broke and required not much more than fuel added.

Why wasn't Reg behind the wheel of one of his cars? I know he use to race when he lived in South Africa. I hope this doesn't mean selling more cars as Reg is always busy now prepping cars for their new owners.

I'm glad Backdraft did well.

A decision was made to compete in Run & Gun with only a couple weeks to spare. A car was yanked off the floor and made ready to run. You are correct, they had to deliver several cars just days before leaving for the event. You'll probably see Reg driving next year in addition to several customers.

They come off the floor with 630hp? Just hop in and 2 weeks later run the fastest time at run and gun. Congradulations to backdraft. So why do they handle so much better than the rest of the cobra's? Scott

They are using late model BMW suspension plus a few other things and it really works. They were going through the S's like a go kart setting one inch off the ground. They only thing is they were probably hitting 100 mph. Wish you could have been there, you would have had some good competition.

Scott: It was a turn-key-minus two weeks earlier. The motor was built in a rush for the event. The car handles extremely well. It was designed to do so using BMW suspension. All you need to do is be smooth, and the car will shave down the lap times. Our driver is awesome, there's no secret there. However, some other hot drivers turned almost a second slower times.

I see that T Martin's car competed in the Big Block group. What size block was it? I'm guessing that at 630 hp it was bored and stroked? I'm just researching Cobras with seriousness for the first time, and I 've only seen small block BDR's online. Does BDR offer turnkey minus cars with big block engine mounts like FFR?

M Train,

I will try and answer part of the question for Robert on the HP. The Backdraft Cobra was a 418 stroked 351 W running over 500hp at the rear wheels. A single 4v, mid size cam, aluminium heads and I believe he was running a Tremic. Tony and his Backdraft Cobra was quite impressive on the straight a ways as well as the drag strip. There was no shortage of horsepower or torque. In fact Tony mentioned to me that he wished the car had less torque so he could use more of the HP on the road course.

Thanks Clois: You're correct, Tony was really wanting more HP. He would have been OK if 5th gear wasn't broke. He couldn't use 5th on the straightaway and it would'nt pull much past 7200 in 4th. He thinks that alone cost him some time.

Also, we offer motor mounts and headers for FE engines on request. No additional charge.

Congrats to Backdraft!

When I was looking at cars, I saw one of their rollers at Carlisle in May '02. They were a nice looking car and well put together. My only hesitiation was the BMW suspension- I wasn't sure how it would handle and survive behind a high hp V8. Seems like it did more than o.k.

I recently rode in a backdraft car with tony martin. IT WAS AMAZING. the suspension was extremly smooth,( even at 140 mph , but lets keep that on the quiet side). i have seen and done research on a few cobra replica manufactures and im sold on BDR's kit.

Any idea as to what the size of the wheels and tires are on the BDR car in the picture?

They are 16" and I don't recommend them. The calipers had to be massaged with a grinder to fit under the rim. 17's are required for big brakes. They wanted 17's but the local vendor only had 16" slicks at the last minute and the had some wheels at the shop.
