Default Whats the best Oil Thermostat to upgrade to?

I have car #170 and I live in sunny south FL, with summer upon us and warm weather driving. High temp steering fluid is a must and im also wanting to upgrade the oil thermostat due to the car being a little older and I'm sure the car would benefit from it. What's your recommendation?

Default Thermostat.

I think you have to first decide what type of mounting you want. If you have a remote oil filter, the sandwich type would be the easiest. Otherwise, it will be a standalone unit mounted in the engine compartment. Either way, you will have to make a few new oil lines. Next will be the temperature you want it to open at. I suggest you do a little research on oil operating temperatures. Earls make good ones. Better ones are made by Improved Racing. I installed the Improved Racing sandwich and was very happy with the quality and function of it. Here it is.

IMO the Improved Racing oil T-Stats are the best choices currently available. They can be had as a stand alone or integrated sandwich style into the oil filter mount. This is a pic of the stand alone unit;

There is a range of temps you can use different internals to set.

Nicely finished, reasonably small and compact and very nicely conceived.

Default Setup

I am going to post 3 pics that should lay it out for you.
A picture of the unit showing the in and out from the unit and oil cooler.
A picture showing my Canton Remote with oil lines before the thermostat was installed.
A picture showing the unit installed on top of the oil filter and the new configuration of oil lines to/from the engine to the remote. You will have to determine this based upon what engine you have. I have a Roush 427r. You can't see the oil lines running to/from the thermostat because they are facing front.

It is in pieces on the bench right now getting a beauty treatment

This stat is blissfully simple to plumb and has a very nice warm up behavior. Their doc provides several different install configs from simple to complex. I liked the simple ...

The doc is downloadable from their site if I remember correctly.

Ed, Fred, thanks for this info, improved racing seems to have very high quality products. Never knew about them before your post! Properly engineered products.

I know, Bill — made in the US and patented!

They have checked off a lot of the boxes ...

I’m running a Canton 22-480 with Canton billet mounting bracket. It works fantastic and has a very nice look. I will try to post a picture of the installation.

I bought the Improved Racing unit as shown by Eschaider.

It will be on ERA 838 when I get it.

I used the Canton remote unit on my last build. It worked as expected. For what it is worth the Improved Racing piece looks nicer and is better designed. It will make install easier and cleaner.

You will love it, John. The install plumbing is blissfully simple and the unit works just as we intuitively expect it to — total operational invisibility.

Agreed. Mine has the integrated oil filter fitting, I replaced the existing remote oil filter housing, and minimal changes to the oil line routing were needed.

Default Works like a charm

It's been over a year since I installed the sandwich style oil thermostat and it's been working like a charm. No issues whatsoever.

Default Using a Canton

I installed to keep the oil warm in winter more than anything, my oil temp goes to 100c like clockwork. If you really feed her the onions i've seen as much as 107 or so.
