Cracked windshield already!
Well the trip to OH I guess got the best of me. Got a crack in the center of the windshield already! And its moving up fast! Any input on how to get it fixed? Should I just call one of those dudes in the trucks to come over and fix it?
REG you got any input? Should I replace it? Sid |
It cannot be fixed. The guys in the truck can fix "stars & bullseyes" only. Cracks require replacement of the glass.
I have the same thing. Rick |
I thought when I saw the title of this thread it was going to be something more like THIS. :D
Sorry to hear about the crack, but huge congrats on getting it done and on the road so quickly! |
got snake,
If it is a crack from a stone chip, you'll need to buy a new piece of glass. If it is a stress crack cause by installation, Reg should be able to get it replaced. Either way call Reg, it will save you a lot of time by going to the source. Good luck. |
Last weekend two BDR windshields were cracked while racing at Roebling Road.
Chester Littlefield (BDR # 12) and mine (BDR #223). Jay Baranzano also cracked his windshield a few weeks earlier racing at the same track. This is Chesters 2nd cracked windshield while racing. Perhaps its the aluminum frame that is allowing for greater flexing and the resulting cracked windshield??? I spoke to Reg about it briefly and he is looking into it. My suggestion (for the racing crowd) is to replace the glass with Lexan. I raced my last Cobra (FFR) for 5 years and never cracked a windshield. However the frame was chrome over brass, not aluminum...... Chester and I both have the M3 suspension (I am unaware of the suspension in Jay Baranzanos car). Perhaps the stiffer springs and sway bar causes too much stress on the frame allowing for more flex?? Ed |
Same here SPF#1310
Stone at high speed cracked my windshield also this weekend.
Where do you get replacement windshield for SPF? Thanks, Jeff. |
Mine also cracked after a track day. After getting a new screen I noticed during refitting that the original installer of the screen had pre loaded the screen by misalignment of the dash mounted centre support bracket. I redrilled holes to ensure no preload and have had not problems since.

gotalbots...call your SPF dealer. Bill

A local glass shop can replace it in no time flat. I've never checked on a new piece of glass, but I think they are <$250. Glass shops usually get $50 to put in the new glass. I have replaced several, and it would be worth it to me to spend the $50 from now on!

Mine cracked also back in February. Not a stone chip. It happened after a short cruise around town. Parked it back in the garage and the crack appeared the next morning. It started from the bottom of the frame on the drivers side and traveled upward and took a 90 degree turn toward the center. I have heard of some other BDR's with the same problem. I am currently waiting for a replacement from Reg.

I remeber reading a memeber post where he installed an aftermarket windsheild and frame from finish line to replace the backdraft. Why go back with a BDR frame/glass, it appears they have a design flaw. It is too coincidence with this many windsheilds breaking.
|
If memory serves me correctly I believe SPF cars had a similar type problem a year or so ago. Can't say that those cars have an engineering flaw, probably just got a bad run of glass in the windshields. The important thing is how they address the problem and take care of their customers.

I'm on my third windshield in 2 years..... I think the fiberglass body is flexing, and tweaking the hard-mounted windshield. I loosened the mounting bolts, using Nylock nuts, to allow the windshield to move with the body, and so far have not cracked another one in 6 months. I even had a clueless passenger grab the windshield frame to pull himself out of the car, and it didn't break.......his arm did, though!

Called Reg and he wants a pic to see if it can be covered under warranty...to be continued...

#139's windshield cracked vertically top-to-bottom in two places while sitting in KCMS's shop in Plano, TX waiting for the engine install.
I replaced with an aftermarket which seems happy, so far, but I will have to drill and tap to make the original wind deflectors mount up. Think I'll leave them off, I'm used to it. No, I'm not bitter. Warranty? What warranty? Show me one. It's probably attached to my vinyl top, which I paid for and was supposed to be delivered in mid-December, 2004. No, I'm not bitter. UT |
I have #84 with 4000 miles on it , coming back for the hot rod power tour a crack apeared on the drivers side about 2" long and now is down the whole windshield. I live in florida and the insurance co by law will replace the windshield for free.
