tfar, how can you be sure it is a limited slip 3.91? Is there a part number?

Yes, the S 391 of the tag on the diff indicates Limited Slip and 3.91. The price can't be beat. It may need new seals, maybe not. If the internals are good it is a great deal for a BDR swap out.

I am about 45 minutes from Milwaukee and sent the guy an email. The gear calc shows my 2500 rpm to be 72mph in 5th. I really don't care much about the lower speeds, but that is a bit high for the open road. I want to swap my wheel/tire from the 15"295-50 to the 17"335-35 which I think is about the same diameter so it would be a diff and speedo gear change. I could even upgrade the lockup pads to 50%. Also, my engine makes well over 400 torgue so that will be a pretty good strain on a stock E36. This may be the right time to go M3. Any thoughts?

I had 3.91 in my BDR, if you were not shifting as soon as the pedal hit the floor you were hitting the rev limiter. It was extremely difficult to get out of first and not bump the rev limiter. On the open road I had no problem with 2500 rpm in 5th at 70 mph. I had a Tremac 3550. Personnally I feel the 3.4? would be the right match.

I have nothing right now but about 50k burning a hole in my pocket. I really had a hard time getting out of first without the car sounding like a machine gun hitting the rev limiter, 2nd and 3rd gear were fantastic. It was just first gear, it was a little steep.
