jaybar; get a voltmeter and check from alternator output terminal to ground.(or across battery terminals) voltage should be 13.75 to 14.25 volts dc. But you've already done that ! Your dash volmeter has already informed you of a overvoltage situation! your alternator/regulator is bad! Only other posibility is a short from the output to the "ign" wire if you have a 3 wire alternator.
