Advice about Purchasing Cobra (DMV)

Hi Guys,

I have sold three cars with the SPCN SB100 certifications. The title has all of the information and simply follow the direction on the back of the title when you sign it over to the new owner. This only works if the new owner is in California but, if it sold to an out of state owner it can still be brought back in under the original SPCN designation.

The original SB100 documentation is nice to have and the car does not have to have the SB100 sticker on it......The title with the SPCN designation is the document the DMV works with and then reissues the tilte with the SPCN designation to the new owner. The dollar value that the old owner writes on the title is what the DMV looks at for registration fees.

Good info to know. Thanks for all the post.
The local DMV offices are retarded, so I'm just worried that when I go in they'll say "what the hell is a SB100?" or they'll want a smog check. I use to have a street Dune Buggy which I gave up on because of registration issues. So I'm nervous about it being an issue.

Not a big deal, the DMV will recognize the title, pay the fees based on the number writen on the back of title, they register the car to you and send you the new SPCN title back to you in your name. All the crappy stuff was done by the guy that did the original SB100 process.

BTW good advice above look on Cobra Country for other cars that have an SB100 Title and may be an alternative to the car you put into your original post.

There are 350+ 2011 SPCN registrations sitting at the DMV right now if you want to take on the process, it really is not that big a deal.

I recently bought a cobra, it has/had the SB100 certificate and DMV label inside the engine compartment. All i did was take the old (previous owner's)registration to AAA, to transfer the ownership and have them issue me a new title and registration.
I cut a check and they sent paperwork to DMV, in the mail i received my new title and registration; the SB100 designation follows the vehicle to which it was issued.

Never did take the vehicle to the DMV, which i would encourage when dealing with bureaucrats w/ power driven by ignorance or resentment. The perfect storm. Find the right office if you need to take it in, people on this forum have knowledge of them, and maybe the ones to avoid.

Well I bought the car tonight. Needs a few small things to button it up.
I'll be heading to the Pleasanton DMV tomorrow. Hopefully I wont have any issues.
Once I'm settled in with the car, I'll post pix and other stuff.

I live in Pleasanton and registered my car there I think on Jan 3rd @ 6:30am, first day they were open, in 04'. Since mine was a new SB100 and the car was new I also had to visit the CHP for a VIN and then get the DMV SB100 then go to the BAR at Las Positas College for the exempt smog check I think it took 3-4 seperate trips to the DMV. Since your's has already been through all that it should be a single trip. Hopefully you will get one of the more experienced people there?

Did you check to see if they are open tomorrow? With all of the cutbacks, a lot of them are even closed on Fridays.

Should be easy enough, with all that was said on this post. Mine was previously registered from before SB100 when I regstered it. I did the DMV in Pleasanton and it was a normal deal. No problems, other than the wait.

Went to the DMV today. Didn't have a problem registering it.
Got a hi-five and several people took pix of the car. It's insane. I didn't expect this much attention.

Congrats.....that is what the SB100 registration does for the specialty car builder and the next owner.

SB100 is transferable, I bought the car with SB100 sticker/cert. And just pay the tax, then transfer ownership to my name

SPCNS Certificates of Sequence cannot be transferred to a different vehicle or reissued in someone else's name. The seller of a vehicle must provide the buyer with the SPCNS Certificate of Sequence along with the bill of sale and any additional registration documents. In addition, fees deposited in one year cannotbe held over for the next year's allocation of certificates.

Do yourself a favor. Take the completed paperwork to your dmv for verification before you pay for the car. You may be surprized. Good luck!

Hi Guys,

The SB100 process is stringent and more difficult than other states but, the DMV is not the boogie man. Once the Cobra, Hot Rod, Motorcycle etc. that replicates a vehicle from the past gets the SPCN title it stays with the vehicle. It never has to be smogged and the new owner enjoys the fruit of the labor and investment from the original builder.

If the original builder that followed the process, as outlined by the state, decides to sell that vehicle it is a one time visit and simple process at the DMV. You pay the fees, based on the sales price written on the title, the existing registration on the plate keeps its date to renew the registration and a new title is issued in the name of the new owner.

The owner of this thread has had that experience as testimony that it does work. We all thanks to Mr. Morganthaler for getting it put into place.
