Ever been pulled over driving your Cobra?

I really did not get pulled over more of an acknologement.

I was out 1 saturaday trying to tune the Webers crusing around the area not far from the house. I had no hood, no insurance, no plate, no registration.

I came up to a 4 way stop with 2 cop cars on my right. I figured I couple wave the first cop to go but would the second one follow? As the first cop pulled of the 2nd cop waved me on to go. I suggested back to the cop for her to go. she then flip the lights on and blipped the siren and insisted that I go.

I decided to turn right (with the turn signal ) so she would not get a change to see no plate and to head in the opposite direction. She (cop) decided to make a U-Turn and run me down. I pulled over right away.

As she appoarched my car she began to talk to me about the car. As she was leaving she mentioned dont worry, if I wanted to pull you over it would not be for the missing hood, plate and probably no registration. She mentioned, I would have nailed you for the speeding you were doing in the back streets a few weeks back.

Had the Gt40 and the Lone Star Cobra in the driveway cleaning them and the cop pulled in the cul-de-sac across the street and parked. I figured what a jerk, he is waiting for me to leave and will get me for no front tag, noise, something. Well I walked over to try to avert this situation and talk to him. He said "I am just sitting here wondering if you have a cobra and a gt40 in the driveway, what the heck you got in the garage?" We laughed and have become friends and he goes up to the local neighborhood car show, in his patrol car, with me on sat. nights. Lets us make noise but be nice!!!! Good to have a local on your side. He is a gearhead as I think alot of officers are.
In my daily drivers I have no front tag as required by Texas Law and have been stopped over the years several times for it. In the Cobra or 40 I have no tag and they never say a word!!!!!

Well my story really isn't a fair representation of the pitfalls a
"normal" person faces.

I decided at the last minute to attend a car show in Port St. Luciw Fla., I lived in Ft. Laud. , so roughly 100 miles. I needed to be there at a certain time, to register for the car show. This was around 1980.

I had about 90 min. to get there, if memory serves me. Needless to say I "opened it up". About half way there on the turmpike, I passed a Florida Trooper sitting off of the road. Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I was dead meat, (well a normal person would be).

I pulled over as soon as I saw the Trooper pull out, and was waiting for the Trooper to catch up to me. To my amazement the Trooper was a woman, and it being around 1980, to further amaze me, she was black.

The first thing out of her mouth was, "do you know how fast you were going" ?, and the second was, "let me see the motor". We exchanged details on the car, she thoroughly enjoyed every last detail. After about 7 mins., I told her the reason for my speed, and that I needed to get going.

She said goodby, and asked that I not speed too much. No ticket I was going around 120 when I passed her.

Now that I was running even more late, I needed to pick up the pace. The remaining part of my story involves another Trooper, and a speed of over
140 ! The reason for not being normal, I was and am, a retired police officer.

Coming back from a road trip, the wife and are were getting frustrated with a bunch of "left lane riders", poking along at 55 in the left lane, and basically irritating everyone behind them. Finally, the wife says "you have a clean shot in the right lane hit it!"
So I hit it hard. Just as I am reaching some pretty serious velocity we go blowing by a Trooper on the side of the road. The wife says "You may as well keep going" But for whatever reason, the Trooper never even pulled out after me. I think I should have bought a Lotto Ticket that day! LOL

A friend of mine who I hadn’t seen for a while was in town so I picked him up at his hotel in the Cobra. We’re cruising along at 65 on a freeway with a speed limit of 55mph. Because this friend of mine (who happens to be a black man) and I are yack’in so much, I don’t notice my speed or the CHP tailing us. Finally he pulls right next to us for a minute or so, drops back and hits the lights and siren. My buddy says “here we go, the white guy gets the ticket and the black guy gets beat up” . I was convinced he was going to write me up so I put out all the lame excuses I could muster. “Didn’t know it was a 55, wasn’t paying attention, old friend in the car, blah, blah,blah”. My friend who has more insight to police procedures than I do, finally cannot contain his silence anymore and says to me “if you just shut up now, he probably isn’t going to give you a ticket!” I did, and he didn’t.

Well the end of the story really isn't as interesting. No I didn't receive a ticket for going 145 MPH. But then again, I didn't stop, or get pulled over.

I was going North, he was going South. He saw me or got me on radar, and I saw him hit his brakes. I figured he was going 70, as most Troopers do, I calculated in my head real quick, how long it would take him to stop, at a U-Turn area, or just crossing the median, waiting for an opening, then for him to accelerate up to 150, just so he could attempt to catch me.

Well, he wasn't going to be able to get to 150, let alone 140. All the while he was trying to stop and get turned around, I was still clicking off over 200 ft. per second.

I only had 3 miles to go to the exit, I weighed the time factor, (I did want to enter the car show, and by the way, I did get 1st place), if I stopped, and the distance etc., etc. and if he could catch me before the exit.

Needless to say, I didn't slow down, and I figured by the time I exited, he was maybe up to 100, and pissed as hell. I've always wondered just how far he did go looking for me.

First time I got pulled over, he said, "I'll trade you the ticket for a look under the hood." I gladly obliged.
Then before he left he said:"Please slow down, next time I get you, It'll have to be for a drive".

I use the Valentine 1 now all the time.

No, never got pulled over yet. Only been on the road for around 2 years, 3600 miles. But on a trip back from a Factory Five gathering this past April, 3 of us caravaned from the San Francisco Bay Area to Huntington Beach (south of Los Angeles). It was a Sunday morning and we made it into the mountains by around 11:00AM - yes, there's traffic even on a Sunday in Los Angeles!!!

The traffic speed is posted at 70mph maximum but anyone that drives Interstate 5 will tell you that if you drive that speed, you'll nearly get run over!!!! So we were clipping 80-85mph most of the way. I noted somewhere around Lebec, I nearly lost my two guys. I was the lead car and wasn't quite sure why they fell so far back, so I began to slow down to 75mph. After a while, they finally caught up (only 3 -5 minutes passed I think). When we get to the bottom and stop for lunch, I found out why they pulled back. A CHP was tailing us.

I noted well that if they wanted to pull us over, they would of started with me and then pulled all 3 of us over but I speculated they just wanted to see and hear a trio of Cobra's blasting through the mountians. It also helps that the two behind me sported a BRIGHT yellow paint scheme with black stripes and the other a eye-catching "Magma Orange" pearlecent colored body. I just had the "usual" blue with white stripes.

Once! - It was on the 2007 "Snakes to the Lake" fall run to South Lake Tahoe. It was a beautiful day and we had just finished some great mountain roads. I was mid-way in a pack of about 40 Cobras when I and the rest got stuck behind a dump truck for five minutes or so on a single lane road near Kings Beach on the north side of the lake. After the truck turned off I felt honor-bound to catch up with the rest, and led the charge right through a CHP radar trap, with me being the designated chump. (It was about 80 in a 55 zone) The rest of the guys pased by with various cheers, jeers and catcalls.

Well, I told the Chipper my "stuff" was in the trunk with my wallet and license in a valise along with my retired peace office ID and a personal handgun. At that point he looked my ID over, then smiled and asked "is that a Superformance?" I said yes, you seem to know your Cobras. He told me he had been shopping for a Cobra for more than a year but was long-legged and had problems sitting in most Cobras' cockpits. I offered to let him sit behind the wheel (and I think he wanted to) but I also think he wanted to observe professional decorum, whatever that means. Well, we kept talking about Cobras for about 20 minutes and, of course, no ticket. He was really a nice guy.

Not a pulled over story but kind of fun.
My wife and I were travelling from Carmel back up to Portland via the coast and stopped in Crescent City for lunch. As we were walking into the restaurant a fellow in a dark uniform sitting in a window booth asked me what I was doing driving his car. Told him the keys were in it when I walked by so just decided to take it for a spin. Had a nice conversation with the Chief of Police and the Fire Chief. He was still there when we finished lunch so I asked him if he'd like to take a look at the car. Still remember the sound of the air filling up the vacume he left getting out the door to look. He said he'd been sort of in the market for a Cobra so when I got home I emailed him a couple of web sites for cars for sale. Don't know if he ever realized his dream but I hope he did.

I live in San Francisco and was getting ready to take the cobra out to the Rock House breakfast. Saturday morning about 6:30 AM and just backed the car out of the garage and doubled parked on the street. Ran in the garage to get something ... SFPD makes a u-turn and pulls up next to me. I tell him my brother is a SFPD motorcycle cop, he knows my brother, small talk, and then he says that I should not leave the car alone because someone will want to steal it!

Yep, got pulled over today. Harris county cop in unmarked car. I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong but played along. Come to find out my inspection sticker had expired!!
Told me to get it taken care of and wished me happy fathers day!!

Well it sounds like people should drive there cobras fast more often as it seems only 2 or so people out of 40 even got a ticket!!

I got pulled over for having a "My other car is a Cobra" licence plate holder on my Camry, at 1 AM!! Guy just wanted to talk.

While coming home from the STL trip a few years ago down Hwy 50, we just crossed the river and there was a CHP on the side giving someone a ticket. He held up one hand and signaled the "55" gesture which I waved an OK. There were five of us all together. I guess we were making a lot of noise coming down the hill. I thought we were toast. Well, just minutes later I see the CHP barreling up the highway, thinking he was going somewhere.

Next thing I know is I hear this "Hey Weendoggy" from his speaker (my tag is on the fuel tank). I acknowledge and he says to pull off into the weigh station up the road about 3 miles. I give a thumbs up and off he goes.

There he is with the gate open and all five of us pull in the station. He walks over to me and says he'll weigh all the cars and to wait until he opens the scales. So, one by one we all got weight slips.

Then we all stood around for about 15min. talking to him about cars. He happened to be a Mopar guy with a Charger. He talked more than we did and all had a good laugh. We thanked him and off we went.

No tickets, unless you count the weight slips.

You don't want to get stopped for speeding in France in a Cobra..........$1270 fine, had to paid immediately in cash, cue a Gendarme marching me to the local ATM machine to withdraw the money, 5 kph faster and I would have lost the car.

I keep my speeding activities confined to Germany and Italy now.
