Default Baji's 1/17/09

While not as nice as today, the weather should be OK. Anyone up for breakfast?

My car may be going "offline" for the Winter.

I may be attempting my first oil & filter change (on the Cobra).

Rodney - This is California dude...our cars don't go offline for the winter.

Tom - Hope to make it. Need to check and see what's going on this weekend.

Given my lack of mechanical skills, the ole Cobra COULD be down for a few months after this, my first, oil change on the Cobra. My last oil change attempted, on another car, friends and neighbors were calling me the next "Joseph Hazelwood" (Captain of the Exxon Valdez).

Of course this assumes that my new floor jack and jack stands work properly and I actually connect to the correct spot on my Cobra's frame...always an adventure.

So, to sum up, I COULD be there Saturday for breakfast, if all goes right.

Tip from a fellow cc memeber...Get a Ziplock freezer bag and wrap it around the oil filter. That way, you're not up to your elbows in oil and it doesn't drip all over your car and the floor.

I gotcha beat on that suggestion. I went back in the CC archives and found a suggestion that sounded outstanding to me. Cut the top of a plastic 1-gallon milk container, which has a handle, and use that to catch the oil filter. Sounded brilliant to me, but in practice...who knows.

Since I have to lift my oil filter up and out (I have a 2qt filter mounted in front of the cross member, underneath the 3pt accusump - there's no clearance between the fan shroud and the steering rack to drop the filter ), I drill a hole the in filter and let it drain for a while, before removing it. When it's done draining, I slap a piece of duct tape to cover the little hole to prevent the last drips from making a mess, and then lift it up'n out.

BTW, I've got a long list of honey-do's - I'm starting early, so I'll miss breakfast. Next time...ok?

Milk container sounds even better, but I don't have the clearance.

Nightmare story. I am usually EXTREMELY careful when adding oil. I use one of the flexible funnels. Well, I got cocky and thought I could do two things well at once...the funnel slipped out of my hand and about a 1/4 cup of oil went flying into the engine compartment. My wife thought was going to have a nervous breakdown and also learned some new words.

That's a tame story by my "mechanic" standards. I remember having a virtual "cartoon" type experience trying to hold the oil container under the oil stream coming out of the oil pan. One second the stream was over here, another second it was over there. All the while, at each directional change in the stream of oil, thinking it was the last one, and me trying to get the oil bucket in the right place each time.

I'm out for this Saturday. Going to my daughters cheer competition in Antioch this Saturday. It is an all day event.

That bag trick sounds trick!! The last oil change I did, I was in a hurry. I drained the engine oil, then moved the pan over by the filter. Unscrewed the filter, and dropped it into the oil pan. What a F$$ing mess. Good thing I put my drip pan under the car. Always a good idea. Then I ran over to my wifes Escalade to change the oil in the driveway. Put the pan under the car, pulled the plug. Went to clean up the mess from the cobra, went back out tin the driveway, and about a quart and a half of oil missed the drain pan. WTF!!!!! And no, I didn't have the drip pan under her car.
