Hey guys, I've been working on fixing various areas of my CR that annoy me, removed the dash to do a serious wiring rework and ended up changing up some switches and locations. My dash has a wood face that is attached to the original fiberglass dash piece. Is this how most were done? It's a real PITA to mount switches and such due to the thickness of the combined materials. Everything requires being bored down with a forestner bit in order to get the switches through. Looking for examples of anyone who has replaced theirs. I'm thinking of going with a metal unit since I have access to sheet metal pretty readily and making an MDF or similar frame to go behind it. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated!

Mine just had the fiberglass dash with black covering. I haven't seen many CR's
with a wood dash. It is yours, so feel free to do what you want to with it, especially if it makes it easier with the switches, gages, etc.
I'm thinking whoever originally built mine boogered up the fiberglass and decided to fix it by facing it with wood. I plan on using the current dash for this season and probably work on making a new one over the course of a few months. I see people talk about looking in their albums to see pictures of things they've done but I haven't been able to figure out how to find said albums.
Cr,
Click on the little camera icon under the user's name. That should take you to their photo galleries. I have a wood dash, came with the car when I bought it. I'm a carpenter by trade and really like the look. It is a 1" thick solid piece of cherrywood. Check it out in my gallery. If all the Cobras were identical that would be boring. Make it yours.
Thanks MaSnaka! I knew it would be something simple. Sadly the builder painted over what would have been a nice wood grain. I would like to add the glove box when I make a new one just to have a place for documents. I've seen some pretty radical dashes with a little google search. I'm assuming you have to bore out the back of your dash to get switches and such through?
Switches yes...gauges no. Seems to me using your existing dash as a template it could be a fun project with favorable results. Upside is you can look at your handiwork every time you drive your car.
MaSnaka your dash looks awesome. How did you attach the dash to the car? My existing dash uses 3 carriage bolts from the cowl bar into the top of the fiberglass lip, I would assume I could use L brackets and the existing carriage bolts.
CR,
The dash attaches with (I think four could be three) small "L" brackets at the top connected to the cowl. There is a metal strut connecting the bottom near the center.
