Art,

You are correct about the C9M6015. It is a 1969 Mercury enging but most of the Ford line has a number such as C5ZZ-2140-CR.

C5==1965, Z= car line, in this case Mustang, Z= Ford service part, This came from Ford enginering department. The 2140 is a basic part number which in this example happens to be a master cylinder.

Is yours a big block or small block and did you maybe miss a letter code between the M and 6?

Another person posted his number for his block and it was E9AE-6015-AA-9. That breaks down into E= 1980s, 9= year, ( 1989), A= Galaxie, A= Ford engine department. I am sure some of the guys have a btrakdown for your code but everything I have or have seen has CXX-XXX type code.

Try this link WWW.ac427.com/html/engine_numbers_ford.htm

Also this one www.classicmustang.com/decoding_part_numbers.htm

Also http://pliverman.home.mindspring.com/index3.htm

Hope this helps.

Ron

Default engine ID #'s

the C= decade; in this case 1960's
the 9 indicates th eyear; in this case 1969
the M indicates the vehicle model; i.e., a mustang, a galaxie,etc.
6015 is the part number

the remaining alpha/numerics usally indicate versions of the part that were manuafctured after the original manaufacture; This is something similar to computer software realeases such as Windows 3.0, 3.1, etc.

I am currently not home but I have acouple of books at home that I believe outline the exact data. Hang in there and I will check for the info when I get home.

Just got home and checked through a few books. Couldn't find anything that exactly matches what's on your block.

As far as the first part, C9M6015, it does appear that there is a character missing between the M and the 6. The M stands for Mercury and the 6015 is the part #, in this case a block. The character that seems to be missing is the fourth position and would be either an A for Chassis Group, a B for Body Group, or an E for Engine group. In your case it should be an E as th epart is a block.

After that string of characters there may be a Suffix Letter. An A would indicate an original part, a B would be the first revision, a C would be the second revision, and so on.

There may also be a Date Code indicating when the part was cast. This code is usually of the format of 0H14 which would indicate a date of August 14, 1970. Another example would be 5A26 which would indicate January 26, 1975.

As far as what is on yours, FA5, I could not find anything definitive. I could venture a guess that the A5 part may indicate January 5th but the "F" has me baffled, It possibly could be a revision code indicating the 6th revision.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe one of the Forum's Gurus can help out.

Tony

That's more like it. The W indicates that it came from a Cougar
