Cobra Manufacturer
Just bought an unfinished cobra that has been sitting in a garage for over 25 years. I am trying to find out who made it. The only number I can find on the frame is near the engine block. Stamped into the frame is NF 975.
The guy thinks it might be a Shell Valley, but he is not sure. This would help me find the additional parts I need. Thanks |
If you post some pictures of the frame and body I think it would help a bunch.

Photos will help a lot...particularly photos of the interior/dash, the frame, the suspension, the front of the frame where the radiator mounts, the area where the differential is mounted.
If the number on the frame were NAF975 I would say North American Fiberglass...a very fine replica. Are you sure there's not an A in there? Others who are more familiar with the information needed to identify the manufacturer will probably be along shortly....but in the meantime, please get the digital camera out and get some photos. Looks like a Jaguar IRS...the front end looks like Mustang II with a rack and pinion steering rack.
The door hinges look homemade....not that there's anything wrong with that, it just looks like they just stick way out into the cabin, which would not be the way the manufacturer would have designed them. The frame looks like square steel.....that might help someone come up with a source. One other thing that seems to set various kits apart is whether the edges of the rear area of the cockpit and the wheel openings are rolled or not...if you can post some shots of those areas it might help some of the ID gurus! Is it a 90" wheelbase or a bit longer. The footwells remind me of an early CMC design, but I do not remember them offering the jag rear set up like the one bolt in to the frame as shown.

I would be very surprised If It ends up somthing other then shell valley. The cowl support as well as the frame pictures match shell valley from the early to mid 80's call dana at shell valley I am certain he can help.....M

What does the transmission cross member look like? It looks suspiciously like an early LA exotics car.

North American Fiberglass. I have an old Kit Car magazine the frame looks the same. They usually had a straight axle but I guess the jag rear was an option

The LA Exotics cross member are more of an X configuration. I'm starting to agree with the NAF identification.
Regardless, the biggest problem you're going to run into is finding parts that aren't made any more and probably aren't available. You're going to have to fab up some of your own parts, find parts that fit by trial and error, and basically build from what you have. With a little work, you can do it- just ask lots of questions on the scratch builders' forum and we can probably get you through it. Bob |

Barry, It is definately a Shell Valley. Manufactured in 85, 86 or 87. I have an 86 Shell Valley under construction now. Please look at my album by clicking on the camera. I can also copy and mail the Shell Valley assembly manual to you if you would like. Feel free to call at 816-833-3953 or e-mail. I for got to mention, the red car in my photo album is an NAF car of the same time frame and your car is not an NAF car.

I am pretty sure it was made in 86 or 87 because it has a 1986 Mustang 5 speed transmission in it.
