Talking Best places to look...

Hello Gentlemen,

I've been running through listings for weeks all over the internet.

I am interested in buying (in the near future) a Superformance Cobra specifically with a Roush 427R/SR or even an IR.

Where are the best places to look? Thus far, Cobra Country has been #1 for me.

I cannot believe how difficult it is to find a Superformance (or other maker) with an actual 427 (or larger) these days. Everything seems to be 289s, 302s, and 396s...which IMO are just all wrong (no offense to anyone). To add insult to injury, the cars running with a 289 or 302 have asking prices equal to cars of the same quality or better with 427s and 460s.

Anyway, I appreciate all feedback you guys can give.

Best

-TK

I'd guess the 427 small block is the most commonly installed engine in a Superformance so you must need to increase your budget because they are certainly out there. Arguing the "correctness" of a small block 427 is also a stretch around here...

But good luck in the hunt

Your best bet is to get out to a local Cobra get together to check out and compare the different cars and get the pros and cons of each manufacturer, engine choices, etc.

As Jay mentioned, a lot of SPF cars have small block Roush 427s, 402s, or some derivative of other 351W based motors.

Club Cobra and Cobra Country are great places to begin your search.

To clarify, this car is not for me - it's a gift for another. I would prefer a Shelby 427 FE (468 CID) but this isn't about me.

When I was a little kid I went to a cobra meet in Northern Cal. I went around to all the cars in pure admiration. However, after seeing 4 or 5 in a row that ran with 289 or 302, while still boasting the 427 badge on the side - I was so let down.

From then on I have always believed that if your car has a number on the side - that's the engine that should be in it (if not bigger).

I apologize if I ruffled any feathers. I have heard great things about this forum.

Doug, what made you decide to go with the Roush 402SR? Since more people seem to be going with smaller engines in these cars now days - maybe I am missing something??haha

Just FYI, -TK : I rode in a Superformance cobra with a Keith Craft 408W that was over 600hp, and it scared the LIVING S-H-!-T out of me.. I dont think it makes two farts what number is on the fender. If you are looking at a SBF Windsor in the car, you wouldn't know looking at it if it was a 351, 392, 408, 427, or any other displacement.

( FYI - mine will have 427W SBF, so the displacement will match the badging )

I had 351 badges on my Cobra which was a 418. The Coupe has no badges.
The 69 NASCAR Cobra has no badges but has 428 on the scoop.

Welcome and good luck on your search.

Just curious, where did you see a Superformance MKIII with 289 or 302 cid?

On Cobra Country.com, currently, there are about 2 or 3 Superformances listed for sale with 302s and several Factory Five's with 302s. I only saw one BDR with a 289 and it was sold but I do not see it now.

I will admit, there was a superformance MK III with a supercharged 5.0 Coyote with 600 hp that I really thought was nice regardless of the motor.haha.

If you look at CobraCountry.com, there are several Superformance and several Factory Five's listed with 302s. Not sure how they command the prices they are listed at...but who am I to tell.

I saw one BDR with a 289 but it is no longer listed.

It was listed on CobraCountry as well...however I no longer see it listed (on that site at least).

Since I am sensing sarcasm, let me just say two things...

(1) I apologize for upsetting anyone with my comment that I do not think it
is, let's say "traditional" to have an engine smaller than what is being advertised on the side of it - no matter the horsepower.

(2) Not sure how many of you have been consistently searching listings for the last 8 months or so, but you would be surprised at how many Superformance, BDR, Factory Five and Emerson cars are running with a 289 or 302.

If a BDR with a 289 is unbelievable for you, you would get a great laugh at what's currently out there for sale

You just don't need huge HP in a street Cobra. The small block Windsor-based engines make so much HP these days you could easily outrun an FE block car (and kill yourself in the process) unless it's a Nascar type FE. Just be smart about what you need, and keep the hood closed. A 289-302-351-427 Windsor all look the same.

Just looked and didn't see a single Superformance 427 (MKIII) listed with anything less than 327 cid. So I'm curious, what SPO number(s) are you referring to? I did see a Superformance 289 (MKII) listed with a "289" but that's a completely different car and generally more expensive. Perhaps that's the confusion?

TK,

My guess is that the majority of SPFs you'll find have some version of a Windsor motor. When I bought my car, I was either going to go with Roush 427 SBF or the 402. I saved a few bucks on the 402 and it still has plenty of power (dynoed 500/500 and the crank). Also, some of the earlier Roush 427 SBFs had some problems, which weren't seen in the 402s.

Can't say that I haven't seen a 289 or 302 in a SPF or Backdraft, but anything is possible. Keep looking and you'll find the right BB.

Btw - You may want to change your CC handle to 427FE. ;-)

The OP states he's looking for Small Block Superformance Cobra "specifically with a Roush 427R/SR" but is finding 289's and 302's.... so I figure he's talking about cid.
