Greetings. I'm Joe, and I have been reading Club Cobra for just the last couple of months. During that time I have been working to get a friend's Cobra road & sale ready; it had been sitting in storage for more than 15 years. The short story is my wife and I decided to purchase the car for ourselves! I haven't driven the car yet, it still needs a couple of items to make it right to drive, and there are still a lot of "unknowns" (since I really haven't driven the car yet, only started the engine). One of items to do is to buy new tires. It currently has Goodyear Blue Streak "Track only" tires on. I need to get tires that will be primarily for street use. One question I have is, how best to properly size the new tires. The current tires simply have 6X15 in the front and 8X15 on the rears. Any thoughts on tires and tire size?
I've gotten a lot from reading the many informative posts on this site...thanks to all you contributors!

Welcome Joe,
Congratulations on getting your Cobra. As for the tire size I would make sure that whatever I went with would clear everything under the fenders and when turning. The 15" tires are getting harder to find all the time, at least around here. I am sure some of the others may have some good ideas for your tires.

Welcome to the club. I think 6X15 and 8X15 are relatively narrow by todays standards on a 427, but may look right on a 289 car or a narrow hip 427 street roadster. Tell us a little more about the Cobra. Is it a replica, and do you know the brand? 289 or 427 body style? The common 15" tire sizes for most 427 bodied cars are 275 60X15 rear and 245 60X15 on the front. Many go wider on the rears - up to 315 - if their body/chassis can accommodate the width. In some cases, certain cars are particularly suited to their own specific tire sizes that may differ from the above.

Joey,
Because there are many variations of Cobra replicas, you might want to start by measuring the height, cross section width, etc. of your current tires. Then use a website like tires.com to learn what current tires are about the same size. If you can see how much space you have while the suspension is flexing, you might be able to go a little larger.

Are you looking at the tire itself, or the rim markings?
Can you post pictures of what you are working on so we can assist you properly? Pictures always go a long way when it comes to Cobra replicas, because they are not all the same.

Welcome to Club Cobra. Not sure if it will help but tirerack.com has a tire comparison feature where it compares all dimensions. It came in very handy when I was changing wheel size on my car. (not a cobra)

Welcome to the fun Joe. I would highly recommend that you get in contact with Bob Lacey at Vintage Wheel. Thier web site is vintagewheelsus.com and the local phone number is 619-952-4717. Fortunately for you, it appears that Vintage Wheels is located in your backyard as they are also in the San Diego area. Bob is a great guy and he is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He has done a outstanding job assisted many of us over the years when we need wheel and tire solutions for our cars. He can definitely help you sort out your tire and wheel options so that you can get the right setup and get that car back on the road where it belongs.

Guys, Thank you all for the responses; I appreciate the suggestions and vender references. Some more detail on the Cobra we have; it is a 1990 Butler / Arnst built Cobra with a Dan Fodge built engine and Jaguar rear. It has Halibrand spinners, but I haven't found any manufacturer markings on the wheels themselves...but the wheels seem to be pretty light weight when I pick them up. I'm sure the 6X15 and 8X15 designation on the existing track tires are a reference to the rim width rather than the tread width. I'll try to post a couple of pictures

I've seen that engine (great engine combination by the way) picture before, now I just have to dig up where I saw it.
Any close up shots of the tire sidewall?

Bill, Thanks for the positive comment. I have a closer shot of the tires, but the resolution is not that good. I'm having difficulty getting the image uploaded. Maybe I exceeded my upload quota...I'll keep trying.

Love the Artnz/Butler cars. I am looking for one myself. The best tire for the street are Mickey Thompson. Good longevity and good traction

Well, I decided to get a set of Mickey Thompson Sportsmans. After reading many threads on the subject with all the pros and cons that members have written, it appears that the SRs and STs are liked in equal numbers, and I haven't heard any damming reports on either. It seems like a coin toss!
I'm either getting 295/50-15 & 235/60-15 STs or 26x10-15 & 26x12-15 S/Rs. At this point I expect the Cobra to be on the road a majority of the time, with me starting to dabble with the track in the future. If anyone has strong opinions, I'd be interested! I appreciate all of the input I have received thus far.
As an aside, I went to Discount Tire in Rancho San Diego yesterday to check availability of Mickey Thompsons. They were pretty clueless about MTs ("are you putting them on an ATV?") and recommended I buy Goodyears or Coopers instead. I'll try another vender....
