Cr 427
Hi, I just joined after years of looking at the site. Thought I could finally belong since I just purchased a Cobra kit!
A "twice started" Classic Cobra 427 kit that was purchased form Gary Rutherford during his 2nd ownership of the company. The 1st owner purchased it during the Chicago Auto Show in 91. He go the chassis & power train (90 Mustang 5.0 HO w/T5 8.8) assembled. He then sat the body on the chassis and found the EFI would not clear the hood. He took it back off the chassis to ponder it for some time. It sat for awhile until he decided to sell it.
The 2nd owner took it home and started to finish the assy. He came the same discovery when he sat the body done on the frame. After discussing with a few people, he was convinced it could be modified. But when he got quotes for the paint in the range of $8k, he decided to hold off until more pressing issues (home, kids) where "off the plate". Fast forward better than 10 yrs and he decides it needs to move forward to a new owner.
Along come I with more cash than brains! Yes, I have looked at and visited almost every kit in the US for Cobras and know the "best" kits. Had long thought I wanted a FFR 289 FIA. But when you are in your 60's, have had a hip replacement, and 6'2", 215lbs, & you struggle to get in and out of the car. you think about "do I really need the fastest & best handling Cobra on the marketplace? Add to that a price that was better than half the kit price along with the extra room, I find myself walking away with a new "project".
Now I believe I have enough experience and skill to really finish the car. And it will exceed my driving skills. Plus my wife would like to drive & ride in it in the backroads of Wisconsin! But being the Hot Rodder I am, I am already looking at what I can do to "improve the breed".
So, if anyone has any thoughts as how not to make the same mistakes with this kit (other than telling me I bought the wrong kit), I would welcome the feedback!
