Default New to Cobras

Hi all.

I am looking at a cobra for sale which is called a VSE. It has an aluminum chassis designed and possibly built by Herb Adams. It appears to be one of a handful built.

does anybody have any knowledge of them?

Stretched chassis design, using a backbone concept, body built by Kube in Arizona, what seems to be your concern(s)?

Do you know the wheelbase? Concerns as in have there been any problems with the design? Its an all aluminum chassis with the body bonded to it. It has a winters live rear axle and looks to be pretty light. It has a Chevy (ugh!) all aluminum engine with four webers. It looks to be a no expense spared build. also has a tremec 6 speed.

I have been autocrossing about ten years. I'm kindof old but in decent shape. My current autocross car has about the same power to weight ratio as the cobra.

Apparently it was built in 2009....or completed in 2009. One of the stickers says 2002, so I'm not sure what all that means but apparently it has a good CA title.

It looks pretty nice with a few blemishes here and there to indicate some age. that's alright with me I plan to drive it and autocross it so a perfect car would not be for me.

Believe they were 96-98" wheel base

If you are talking about THIS ONE and you plan to go drag racing, go for it. If you plan to use it on for the street, I'd continue looking.

No its not that one. I plan to autocross it and occasionally drive on the street. It appears to be a race car which has a thin veneer of street legality. Lights, turn signals....that's about all.

Make sure you have someone that knows how to do a pre purchase inspection on a hand built car such as this look over the car carefully, very, very carefully.

I'll leave it at that.

I'm going out to look at it monday or tuesday next week. Any Cobra experts near Monterey to look at it with me? I'll pay a resonable fee for it.

So i went and looked at it. Drove it around a bit satisfying myself the engine is alright. The chassis is extremely rugged, the steering is very nice but a bit heavy when at rest, and the brakes feel fine with no boost. ONce it was warmed up it ran very nicely.

I’m having it shipped home. I should have it in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for all the excellent help!

Congrats!

There might be several (maybe even many) around here who will scoff at the Lambo orange, and the 8-stack sticking through the hood, but there is one outspoken bald guy in Arizona who thinks it looks SERIOUSLY cool....

Looks like a life-sized HotWheel, and who doesn't like playing with HotWheels...????

Well, I like the orange. It’s not a traditional cobra at all under the skin but the body I understand is pretty accurate. I love the chassis with its aluminum frame and monocoque body application.

Nothing that a good hood scoop won't hide.

I'm sure you will enjoy the new car- you can always play with the handling to get it how you like it.I never autocrossed any of my Cobras as I have a Locost like yours but mine is Yamaha powered and is not competitive in BMOD but is good for local events. Any luck selling the old Del car? Rich

Congratulations on getting your Cobra. As for some not liking the color or the 8 stack don't worry about them. It doesn't make any difference what you get there are always going to be some that have something to complain about it not being right. As long as you are happy with the car that is all that counts as you bought it for you and your enjoyment. Have fun and enjoy the car.

I have had interest but it is still for sale at the moment. In the market for the fastest D mod in the country? I currtntly have it listed in the scca forum and on racing junk .com.

I like yours. is the yammar equipped with a shaft drive output on its tranny? Then what are you using for a rear end?
That thing must be a fly weight and very quick!

Thnaks Ron! I belong to the Studebaker Driver's forum too and some go on about an incorrect battery tie down. Truth is probably a majority of the Studes still on the road are Chebby powered.

My 39 Stude has a Mercedes turbodiesel with a five speed manual od trans. (I'm not afraid of being different)

I already owned one of the fastest DMOD's in the country (the famous Europa that Ames drove to 4 straight championships),now I am content to drive my Locost to events and switch to my slicks and go for FTD. Rich
