Dan,
I did the same with the carpet - cut it flush with the door sills. Also, start at the top end, not in the middle (and tape the other end so it doesn't scratch anything). Another thing that helped is that you can actually bend them a bit more than the actual curve. That way, you won't be wrestling as much trying to get them to lay against the fiberglass in the middle of the curves. With them bent slightly more than the curve and a second person pushing them into the curved area (pushing back toward the direction you've already screwed down) and holding them tight, you can get a nice fit. I think you have my phone number from a previous PM, so feel free to call if you'd like to discuss in more detail. Kevin |
Thanks guys.

lippy,
Tremendous progress, you have made some great choices. Brent's motor will look mighty good in it's new home. Bet you can't wait to start it up :D |
Lippy - I think you were looking for your engine right after Thanksgiving. Any progress or arrivals to report?
|
Dan,
We had some rocker arm issues on the dyno, so we upgraded a few parts and we're gonna give her another floggin'. |
You know a video of the dyno might be fun. Doesn't have to be high def, just a regular vid.

Here's one I took while we were doing a break-in.

I take videos outside so customers can see that there's no smoke out the exhaust at partial or WOT. I do one from the inside too to show that there's nothing coming from the breathers. I like that second one.
|
Yeah, this thing's a mean son of a gun.
|
Sounds great. Lippy, I'm guessing that'll make any other car you've owned seem kinda tame.

So my engine is done and tested and I should have it in hand in another 1-2 weeks. Next step is to install it. Earlier on this thread, cscobra mentioned that he dropped in the whole engine/bell/trans assembly with everything but that alternator and fuel pump. He did it from the front without a tilter, and he has a toploader. Not sure why the fuel pump would be in the way. I will try to drop in the engine/bell/trans, assembled, from the side with a tilter and two ton lift, and I have a TKO. I will also jack up the rear on larger jack stands to lessen the angle. If it doesn't work I'll pull the trans off and do the engine plus bell only. Additional thoughts and experience appreciated.

Lippy;
You can pull engine/bellhousing/TKO5 with 2 ton engine hoist and tilt adjuster. Hoist on passenger side of car with jack stand on frame at front of door opening. No worries. |
Thanks. I'm guessing passenger vs driver side doesn't matter.

It's been a busy week. I took delivery of the engine on Wednesday night. It looks great, but it was really hard to get it around the workshop by myself. Before installing it in the car, I:
- Checked the starter clearance and clocked the starter - Installed the trans - Installed the slave cylinder - Calibrated the dipstick to read properly Saturday morning I had a bunch of friends over to install the engine in the car. Everything was tight (ceiling clearance, movement of the crane, clearance between the engine and the car) but we got it in as one assembly (engine + bell + trans), and it couldn't have gone any better. The only hiccup was that we didn't use the ERA alternator bracket and then realized we had a serious alternator clearance problem that required lifting the engine a few inches. But then I remembered there was a strange looking "extra" part that turned out to be the ERA alternator bracket, which solved the problem. After getting the engine bolted and leveled, and the trans mount installed, I spent the majority of today: - Installing the driveshaft - Finishing the fuel system plumbing - Checking carb/hood clearances and taking care of odds and ends I'm hoping to get the car started in a week or two, and I already have my CHP appointment to get my VIN in early March. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7379/1...55c12f6d_c.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3792/1...f000c10e_c.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7431/1...8bcd1337_c.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5491/1...7d51417c_c.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5498/1...9ca3cb84_c.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2870/1...37852775_c.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5472/1...006429a3_c.jpg |
lippy,
That’s a serious looking motor, Brent built you a beast! All installed as a complete assembly, nice job … your helpers do good work. The plumbing looks great, the remote oil filter setup is very cool. What type of fuel pump are you running? Nice work with the photos, keep them coming! |
What size tubing is on that driveshaft?
|
Great job Lippy. Wish I had realized at the time that the entire unit could go in at once.
I didn't recognize he alternator bracket for awhile either. I think it was about 2 years before I knew what the tubing for the windshield wiper system was for. |
The regulator and all that plumbing is not needed. The Carter will only give you 7psi.
Plus, you'll bury it when the upper rad hose goes on. |
I thought for a moment that Brent had taken to putting his signature on your drivers side valve cover, ala Shelby...
Looks fantastic! |
