Capitol one - do not trust them
Ok, so get this. Capitol one is mining FACEBOOK.COM for your data.
--they then cross reference it with the credit bourgeois and feed the skip-trace data to collection agencies operated on the behalf of --you guessed it -- capitol one. -
How do I know this >?. -I was contacted ( at home --today 12-24) by one of the said agencies and was asked if I knew "So-n-So" (who is one of my best friends sisters, and asked for her under her married name. -) So the only place I am connected to her is --you guessed it , Facebook.
so here is the multi dimensional evil. - Facebook is selling your name, and / or Capitol one is sponsoring a Facebook game and getting access to your info on a friends "list" -- then using some name matching and grooming through the credit bourgeois contacting 3rd parties for your issue., or contacting you for information on someone else.
I really dont think privacy settings matter a F in this scenario.
How do I know they are doing this, >?
-- we did similar things when I worked for US Bank Corp in the early 90's. -- except they were done with files manually.
We would look at your name and address and cross ref by phone, street stores in the area etc.
Capitol One is not your friend. -
ahh I feel better.
Steve

All you have to do is change your settings on facebook so that people you dont know cannot see your info, who you are friends with, posts, pictures etc.
I have enjoyed CapitAl One over the years and they have been good to me when i have had issues with a few transactions.

Ditto. I don't do any of those "social networking" things. (Except maybe, do car forums count?)

Did you happen to call the dead beat and tell her to start paying her bills so you wouldn't get phone calls at home about her bills ?

Don't kid yourself, they all do it. It's worse than you think.

Are you sure she didn't just write your name down on a loan application as a reference? What about looking at her profile on FB and seeing friends, looking up names online and calling you? Why do you think they are so sneaky that they use an app to get names?
PS, I don't trust FB. Hide all info unless you are direct friends and do not join ANY apps on FB. Or don't use it. For sure never put info you don't want the entire world to know on there.

Banks have been doing this sort of stuff since the Internet came into being. It goes much, much deeper than this. Trust me on that. I spent 14 years in the banking business and know first hand how they work. The book of choice back then was the criss cross book.
There are also addressing services that track who gets mail where. If you get mail at your home you are on that list. If you have an email account and the bill for the Internet service is going to your home, you are on that list.
If they have your email... they got ya! Most people do not know how open your address book is. Honestly it is scary!

I don't social network and I monitor what my wife puts on her account. If you put info about yourself on the net, anyone can get it.

I'm a CIA covert operative and the agency won't allow me to share any of my personal info on Facebook.
....at least, that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!!!

The problem is not C1, its Facebook. And its far deeper than you can possibly imagine and cannot be stopped by changing your personal settings. I can target you on Facebook with an ad that says "Hey >insert your name here< you are a dick!" And out of the millions of people on Facebook, you are the only human being on planet earth that will see that ad. And pick the date and time you'll see it. And if I were a tire dealer, I could also show you an ad that tries to sell you Michelin tires from my tire store as a result of you hitting Michelin.com three days earlier. I can also raise the fare price you see at www.airlineofyourchoice.com because you have returned three times in 48 hours to check on the same trip pricing, and I know you may be about to buy.
This is the high-tech science of behind-the-scenes targeted marketing and re-branding of which most have no knowledge. One other thing....if you do not want your personal identity violated (i.e. people breaking into your house after your son posts that you are all going to Florida on vacation) I suggest you run from FB ASAP.

Speaking of the CIA, I find Face Book to be a great alternative for keeping an eye on what my teens do online. Without my own Face Book account I'd know a whole lot less about their activities. And forget banishing them from FB. Already tried it. They'll just use someone else's ITouch, IPhone, IPad, laptop, netbook, school PC, library PC, or whatever to log in to their account. It's like crack.
The ONE caveat for sure; I don't let them use my own PCs to get on-line.

Absolutely. Had my wife not had a FB account, we'd never have known that there were 50 teenagers partying in our house on a Friday night, drinking my beer, driving mama's Jag XJR around the neighborhood without a driver's license, all while we were 2 hours west of town at a dinner party. Priceless.

Reminds me of the old American Express ad that said, "Don't leave home without it."
Then the Russian comedian, Yokov Smirnoff, shortened it to " Don't leave home." That's been my motto since my boys became teens.
Sure, they'll get into mischief anyway, no two ways around it, but it just won't be at MY house.
