Changing gear oil
My toploader doesn't have a drain plug. Is there room to drill/tap the boss in the case with the trans assembled.
Would removing the lower tail shaft bolt work as a drain?

Jeez, that's a lot of work. I would just suck it out via the fill hole. Look, here's how I do a real fast oil change before I put the ERA away for the winter. That's how I would do your transmission oil as well if it doesn't have a drain plug. I sure wouldn't yank it and drill it (wouldn't pull anything else out of it either).

Wow, I reall didn't think I'd have to show pictures of where the drain plug would or would not be.
Do you drain your oil from the side of your oil pan? or the bottom?

Wow, that's a first.
Yes, I'm sorry. 
Since changing gear oil isn't a 3000 mile interval thing, I'd just stick a little vacuum pump in the fill hole and suck it all out. Pulling a trans to drill and tap a hole would be a big undertaking and as anal as I am, I'd be worried sick about leaving shavings in the case.
It's been awhile since I've built a Toploader, but I don't think removing a tailhousing bolt will let it drain, but you could try.

I remember talking with Dan Williams years ago and he said that when you rebuild your toploader, you should drill the case for a drain plug and change the oil annually. I've had a few toploaders and have never seen one with a drain plug. The bottom bolt in the tailshaft will allow oil to drain. That's where my toploader leaked. |
