I fitted a balance pipe just after the headers on my 302 s/b/f powered Pop street rod. I did shut up a lot of the 'boomy' harsh part of the noise and ,I think, helped the bottom end. I recall I was running MGB straight through silencers but I still had a nice V8 rumble. Not sure if you will have space under a Cobra but the pipes do not have to be big to gain the effect.
