It sounds (no pun intended) like the throwout bearing. If you are using a return spring on the release lever, increase the clearance a bit. If you aren't using a return spring, add one.
If neither of the above actions help, try carefully spraying penetrating oil onto the sleeve that the throwout bearing slides on, and pumping the clutch pedal. Maybe some dirt or congealed grease is preventing the bearing from returning properly.
